Nestled in the heart of France, the Loire Valley offers a picturesque escape into a world of opulent châteaux, vibrant sunflower fields, and historic towns. A recent e-bike tour through this stunning region not only showcased the breathtaking beauty of the landscape but also provided a unique way to savour local delicacies and fine wines. This journey promises an unforgettable blend of culture, history, and culinary delights.
A Scenic Journey Begins
After a swift Eurostar journey to Paris, we hopped on the TGV for just an hour, arriving in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, where the enchanting landscapes of the Loire Valley awaited. With its rolling vineyards and serene rivers, it felt as though we had stepped into a living JMW Turner painting. Despite my initial reservations about cycling holidays—being a fair-weather cyclist and all—I decided to compromise with my partner, Toby, a mountain biking enthusiast, by opting for a self-guided e-bike tour with Cycling for Softies.
Our adventure kicked off at the Château du Rivau, a Renaissance jewel in Lémeré, steeped in history as the place where Joan of Arc is said to have gathered her horses in 1429. After indulging in a refreshing glass of local rosé amidst the beautifully manicured gardens, Quintin from Cycling for Softies arrived with our e-bikes. Over the next three days, we would cover approximately 100 miles (160 km), exploring charming towns like Langeais and Azay-le-Rideau, with plenty of opportunities to pause and appreciate the scenery along the way.
Cycling Through Enchantment
As we pedalled away from Château du Rivau, the landscape unfolded in all its glory—vineyards stretched out before us, punctuated by quaint farmhouses draped in honeysuckle. Our route linked us to La Loire à Vélo, a 560-mile cycling path tracing the river’s majestic course from Nevers to the Atlantic.
After a brief ride, we reached Candes-Saint-Martin, a historic river port town, where we took a leisurely break at La P’tite Vienne. Sipping local beer by the riverbank, we found it hard to resist the charm of the place, extending our visit with a leisurely lunch. The town, with its dusty antique shops and delightful fromageries, was a treasure trove of local character.
Resuming our expedition, we cycled through more enchanting vineyards and fields of sunflowers, their golden heads bowed in the late afternoon sun. Our destination for the night was Fontevraud-l’Abbaye, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. The abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the final resting place of notable figures like Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. The modern yet serene L’Hôtel de Fontevraud L’Ermitage provided a lovely retreat, where we enjoyed a delightful picnic prepared by the hotel’s chefs.
A Day of Discovery
Day two began with the promise of exploration. We set out on a 34-mile route, crossing back over the Loire towards the majestic Château d’Ussé—rumoured to have inspired the tale of Sleeping Beauty. The route was predominantly traffic-free, allowing us to absorb the fragrant air filled with the scents of freshly cut hay and ripe apples.
As we meandered along, we fell into a comfortable rhythm, stopping frequently for refreshment—after an hour of cycling, we would pause for a drink, followed by leisurely lunches. The journey led us through idyllic landscapes, with views of ancient wine cellars hidden among the cliffs.
Arriving at Château de Rochecotte, we settled into our regal abode for two nights. The elegant castle offered breathtaking views of the valley, and dinner was a lavish affair featuring fresh langoustine and locally sourced pork, ending with a decadent crème brûlée.
Final Leg of the Journey
On our final day, we embarked on a 37-mile ride, effortlessly gliding through the countryside thanks to our e-bikes. Our route took us past medieval towns like Azay-le-Rideau and through flourishing orchards, eventually arriving at the stunning Château de Villandry. This 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece is famed for its meticulously restored geometric gardens, a true testament to the beauty of landscape design. Wandering through the manicured hedges and serene water gardens, I couldn’t help but imagine Delphine, my alter ego for the trip, reveling in the tranquillity of the surroundings.
The entire experience offered not just a journey through the stunning Loire Valley, but also a taste of its rich heritage and culinary delights. The trip, curated by Cycling for Softies, encapsulates what makes this region a must-visit destination, with packages starting from £1,510 per person.
