In a world increasingly dominated by screens, a new app, Flock, aims to draw users away from their devices and into the great outdoors through the joy of birdwatching. Spearheaded by renowned ornithological illustrator Keith Hansen, who is meticulously hand-drawing a collection of 1,000 North American bird species, Flock seeks to cultivate a community of conservationists and nature enthusiasts.
A Unique Mission
On a sunlit afternoon in his Bolinas studio, Keith Hansen diligently adds the final touches to a vibrant watercolour of the painted bunting, a species known for its stunning colours. This artwork is part of Hansen’s ambitious goal to create a comprehensive visual guide of North American birds, serving as the artistic backbone for Flock. “That was number 420,” Hansen remarked, indicating the progress of his monumental task. With 584 illustrations yet to go, Hansen’s dedication is palpable.
Flock is not just another app vying for attention; its creators have a distinct purpose. Rather than entrap users in a cycle of screen time, the app cleverly employs game-like elements to inspire outdoor exploration. Co-founders Adam Donkin and Bob Stevenson, both seasoned professionals in the tech industry, aim to build a vibrant community centred around birding and conservation.
The Minds Behind Flock
Donkin, a former lead product designer at Amazon, and Stevenson, a Scottish entrepreneur with extensive experience in the gaming industry, have combined their talents to create a platform that celebrates the beauty of the natural world. Their friendship with Hansen, who has been illustrating birds since high school, forms the foundation of Flock’s vision.
Hansen’s passion for birds ignited during a childhood outing in Maryland, where he first encountered a cedar waxwing. His artistic journey began during his senior year of high school, and after years of dedication, he opened his Bolinas gallery in 1991. Meanwhile, Donkin’s birding journey started at the tender age of four under the mentorship of renowned ornithologist Rich Stallcup. Stevenson, after experiencing the joys of birdwatching, realised how much he had missed by prioritising technology over nature.
A Revolutionary Approach to Engagement
The trio’s collaboration led to the conception of Flock, which differentiates itself by breaking away from traditional app design principles. “We’re trying to get your attention away from your phone so that you can then turn your attention outward,” Donkin explained. Instead of seeking to monopolise users’ time, Flock encourages them to immerse themselves in the environment.
The app features a minimalistic design, allowing users to explore bird species, record sightings, and connect with fellow birders. A unique “high-five” button replaces the typical “like” function, fostering a supportive community atmosphere. This thoughtful approach ensures that users, especially younger ones, feel encouraged rather than pressured to accumulate likes.
The Path Ahead
Launched in early 2025, Flock initially attracted around 100 users, but its numbers have since surged to approximately 1,000. Despite limited marketing efforts, the app has captivated a diverse audience, including notable figures like bestselling author Amy Tan. Tan praised Flock for its stunning illustrations and user-friendly interface, noting how it has enhanced her birdwatching experience.
The app’s latest features include lifelike animations of Hansen’s illustrations, bringing the birds’ movements to life. This innovative touch adds an engaging dimension to the user experience, making birdwatching more accessible and enjoyable.
Why it Matters
As our connection to nature diminishes amidst technological distractions, Flock represents a vital counter-narrative. By uniting art, technology, and the great outdoors, this app not only fosters a love for birdwatching but also promotes environmental stewardship. Flock is more than just an app; it is a movement that encourages individuals to rediscover the beauty of the natural world, reminding us that the most enriching experiences often lie just beyond our screens.
