Archaeologists have uncovered a significant relic of the past just three miles from the iconic Stonehenge. This earlier, simpler structure, believed to be around 5,000 years old, predates its famous neighbour by half a millennium and aligns intriguingly with solar events. Although only the postholes remain, the finds suggest that the site was a focal point for prehistoric gatherings and rituals, shedding light on the community’s relationship with the cosmos.
Unearthing the Past in Bulford
The excavation team, led by Phil Harding from Wessex Archaeology, stumbled upon two large pits which once held wooden posts. These posts were strategically placed 120 metres apart, aligning with the positions of the sun during the summer and winter solstices, similar to the renowned arrangement at Stonehenge. Harding expressed his excitement over the discovery, stating, “Two post pits tell me [much] more about the people 5,000 years ago. This tells me about the whole community, how they were thinking, how they were behaving, how they were revering the heavens.”
The excavation site, located in Bulford, was initially unearthed a decade ago when land was cleared for new army housing. However, it is only now that researchers have conducted a thorough analysis of the alignment, employing advanced techniques to reconstruct the celestial positions as they would have appeared 5,000 years ago. Dr. Fabio Silva, an archaeoastronomer from Bournemouth University, explained, “We basically need to reconstruct the sky, what it looked like exactly 5,000 years ago.”
Artefacts that Tell a Story
Alongside the postholes, a trove of artefacts was discovered, offering further insights into the lives of prehistoric inhabitants. Items including pottery, flint tools, and animal bones were recovered, indicating that the site served as a gathering place. Among the most notable findings was a rare discoidal flint knife, which Harding described as “our star find.” He noted its exceptional craftsmanship and speculated about its potential symbolic significance, questioning whether its shape could reference the sun itself.
Radiocarbon dating has confirmed the site’s age, revealing it coincided with the earliest activities at Stonehenge, when earthworks began to take shape. Dr. Jennifer Wexler, curator of history at English Heritage, suggested that the people behind this earlier structure may have also contributed to the initial stages of Stonehenge, indicating a complex relationship between the two sites.
The Sun and Seasonal Rhythms
The alignment of the Bulford site with solar events raises intriguing questions about the spiritual and agricultural lives of its builders. Wexler noted that the prehistoric communities were primarily early farmers, whose survival was intricately linked to seasonal changes. Today, the summer solstice at Stonehenge attracts thousands of visitors, but Wexler pointed out that for ancient peoples, the winter solstice held even greater importance, marking a time of darkness and the hope for renewal.
She elaborated, “Winter might have been particularly important because it’s a time of year when the light is literally dying, and maybe you need to do something to invoke that return or mark it, because then it’s a return of the spring, when hopefully your crops and your animals will thrive.”
