Progressive voices within the Democratic Party are raising alarms over the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) recent report analysing their substantial defeat in the 2024 elections. Congressman Ro Khanna of California has highlighted the absence of any reference to Gaza in the DNC’s 192-page autopsy, suggesting that this omission could have cost the party crucial support. He asserts that the party’s unwavering support for Israel amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis has alienated voters.
Khanna Calls Out DNC Report
In a pointed social media address, Khanna expressed his dismay at the DNC’s failure to recognise the significance of the Gaza situation. He stated, “There’s not a single mention of Gaza in the 192-page DNC autopsy report that was just released today. As someone who campaigned in Michigan and Wisconsin, let me tell you: one of the reasons we lost is our blank check to Israel and Netanyahu while they committed genocide in Gaza. We must speak and confront hard truths if this party is to win in 2028.”
Khanna’s remarks underscore a growing frustration among progressives, who believe that the party must address contentious issues head-on to regain the trust of disillusioned voters.
Ocasio-Cortez Voices Support
Adding her voice to the chorus of criticism, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York expressed her astonishment at the report’s lack of reference to Gaza, Israel, or the Uncommitted movement. “I think it’s pretty unbelievable that Gaza would not be mentioned once in the autopsy report,” she remarked. “I think it was very clearly a major dynamic and a major thread that was happening in 2024. Regardless of how one feels about that issue, the fact that it’s not even addressed, I think, is a major oversight.”

Ocasio-Cortez has previously stated that the Democratic Party’s future presidential nominee must uphold laws prohibiting US aid to nations accused of human rights violations, condemning the unconditional support for Israel which she claims has facilitated acts of violence in Gaza.
Progressive Discontent with Party Leadership
The DNC’s report aims to analyse the factors behind the party’s disappointing performance, but the absence of critical issues such as the Israel-Palestine conflict suggests a disconnect between party leadership and the concerns of progressive constituents. Many in the party feel that addressing topics like Gaza is essential not only for the party’s integrity but also for appealing to a broader electorate in future elections.
The failure to engage with this pressing humanitarian issue may further alienate younger voters and progressives, who are increasingly looking for accountability and a clear stance on international human rights.
Why it Matters
The DNC’s oversight in addressing the Gaza situation in its post-election analysis highlights a significant disconnect between the party’s traditional leadership and its progressive base. With the 2028 presidential election on the horizon, it is crucial for the Democratic Party to confront these hard truths and adapt its narrative to resonate with a changing electorate. Failure to do so could result in further losses, jeopardising not only their immediate future but also their long-term relevance in American politics.
