A recent outbreak of E. coli linked to cheddar cheese produced by Raw Farm in California has raised significant public health alarms, particularly among vulnerable populations. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has identified the dairy as a “likely source” of the outbreak, which has affected nine individuals across three states, with a concerning number of cases involving young children.

Overview of the Outbreak

The outbreak, which occurred between September 2025 and February 2026, has seen reports of nine illnesses attributed to a dangerous strain of E. coli, known as O157:H7. Alarmingly, more than half of those infected are children under five years old, highlighting the potential risks of raw dairy products. Among the cases, three individuals have been hospitalised, with one suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe complication that can result in kidney failure.

The FDA’s investigation has revealed a genetic link among the bacterial samples from infected individuals, confirming a common source. Seven cases were recorded in California, with additional instances reported in Florida and Texas.

Previous Health Incidents Linked to Raw Farm

This is not the first time Raw Farm has been implicated in a health crisis. In December 2024, the dairy was identified as the source of H5N1 bird flu in three cats in the Los Angeles area, resulting in the deaths of two animals. Concerns were raised about the potential for cats to serve as “mixing vessels” for various influenza viruses due to specific cellular receptors. Furthermore, Raw Farm was linked to a significant salmonella outbreak in 2024, which resulted in illnesses for at least 165 people, reflecting a troubling pattern of foodborne illness associated with the facility.

Raw Farm’s Response and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the current E. coli outbreak, Aaron McAfee, president of Raw Farm, has stated that he will not initiate a voluntary recall unless there is “direct proof” connecting his products to the illnesses. Although the farm has tested 81 samples from retail stores in California, all results have returned negative for E. coli. McAfee has indicated that if he had any concerns about the safety of his products, he would have proactively issued a recall.

Despite the lack of confirmed positive tests, the FDA has recommended that Raw Farm voluntarily withdraw its cheese products from store shelves as a precautionary measure. The agency has also launched an on-site inspection and issued an outbreak advisory to inform consumers, restaurants, and retailers of the developing situation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised the public to avoid consuming the implicated cheese while the investigation is ongoing and to thoroughly clean any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the product.

The Broader Implications

This outbreak brings to light the ongoing debate surrounding the safety of raw dairy products. Advocates argue for the health benefits of raw milk, while critics highlight the risks associated with pathogens that can thrive in unpasteurised products. The FDA’s investigation underscores the need for robust safety measures in raw food production and distribution to protect public health.

Why it Matters

The emergence of this E. coli outbreak associated with Raw Farm serves as a critical reminder of the potential dangers posed by raw dairy products. As health officials continue their investigation, the situation warrants close attention from consumers, particularly parents of young children, who may be most at risk. Increased scrutiny on food safety practices is essential to prevent future outbreaks and protect vulnerable populations from preventable illnesses.
