As Europe grapples with an unprecedented early-summer heatwave, over 350 towns in France have recorded their highest-ever temperatures for May. This extreme weather event has seen temperatures soar dangerously close to 40°C in parts of Spain and has prompted national heat alerts across the UK and France. Meteorological agencies warn that this trend is likely to persist, raising concerns about the implications of climate change.
Record-Breaking Temperatures in France
This week, France’s national weather service, Météo France, reported that a staggering 352 weather stations predominantly in western France have set new monthly temperature records. The highest reading, a sweltering 37.1°C, was observed near Hossegor in the Landes region. The situation is so alarming that Christophe Cassou, a climate scientist, has described it as a “one in 1,000 chance” occurrence for this time of year, based on climate data spanning from 1979 to 2025.
The UK has also felt the impact, with the Met Office confirming that the all-time May temperature record was shattered when Kew Gardens recorded 34.8°C. This confluence of heat is being attributed to a heat dome effect, where hot air from Morocco is trapped under a high-pressure system, escalating temperatures across western Europe.
Extending Heatwave Season
Forecasters anticipate that this heatwave could linger for several more days, with temperatures expected to exceed normal averages by as much as 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. Robert Vautard, a climate researcher, highlighted that the extension of the heatwave season is emblematic of climate change effects. He predicts that similar extreme weather events will increasingly occur in previously cooler months, such as April and October.
In a notable first, France’s national heat warning system was activated in May for the first time since its inception in 2004, with 31 of the 96 administrative departments placed under high-temperature alerts. Eight of these regions are currently on the orange alert level, which cautions residents to take necessary precautions during this severe heat.
Impacts on Public Health and Safety
The consequences of this extreme heat are already being felt. Tragically, a man died during a 10km running event in the Paris suburb of Maisons-Alfort after reportedly suffering a heart attack. In total, ten other participants required hospitalisation, raising concerns about the safety of outdoor activities during such extreme conditions.
Spain is also experiencing its own heat crisis, with temperatures in southern regions reaching 38°C over the weekend—5 to 10 degrees higher than normal. Rubén del Campo from the Spanish meteorological office, Aemet, indicated that this heatwave is expected to persist, potentially intensifying towards the end of the week, with widespread highs predicted between 36°C and 40°C in various valleys.
The UK may not escape unscathed, with temperatures projected to exceed 26°C to 28°C for three consecutive days in certain areas. Nighttime temperatures must remain elevated for an official heatwave declaration, adding further pressure on local authorities and residents alike.
