The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has spiralled out of control, with health officials warning that their efforts to contain the spread of the virus are being overwhelmed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an urgent call for action, as violence against healthcare facilities complicates an already dire situation. With over 220 suspected fatalities reported, the clock is ticking for both local and neighbouring nations.
WHO Sounds Alarm
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, conveyed a stark message during an online meeting of the African Union. As he detailed the escalating crisis, he confirmed that the epidemic is “outpacing” response efforts. “We are urgently scaling up operations, but at the moment the epidemic is outpacing us,” he stated, emphasising the need for immediate intervention from neighbouring countries to prevent further spread.
As Dr Tedros prepares to visit the DRC, accompanied by Chikwe Ihekweazu, the executive director of WHO’s health emergencies programme, the urgency of the situation is palpable. Recent attacks on health facilities in Ituri
