As the deadly grip of Ebola tightens in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning that efforts to contain the outbreak are lagging alarmingly behind its spread. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO’s director-general, highlighted the urgent need for neighbouring nations to bolster their defences, as the situation spirals further out of control.
Outbreak Escalation
In an alarming update, Dr. Tedros disclosed that over 220 suspected deaths have been reported amid the current outbreak, underscoring the severity of the crisis. Speaking during an online African Union meeting, he revealed plans to visit the DRC alongside Chikwe Ihekweazu, the executive director of the WHO’s health emergencies programme. Their mission comes as health facilities face unprecedented challenges, including violent backlash from local communities.
