A new and deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has led to over 100 confirmed deaths and prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to classify the situation as a public health emergency of international concern. The outbreak, which has also reached Uganda, is attributed to a rarer strain of the virus, complicating efforts for containment and treatment.
Timeline of Events
The outbreak’s origins can be traced back several weeks, with the first suspected case identified in Ituri Province. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to widespread fatalities and raising alarm among health officials.
On April 24, a health worker in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, succumbed to the disease, with subsequent reports revealing that their death on April 27 was linked to severe symptoms, including excessive bleeding. Tragically, a close contact of this initial victim also died shortly thereafter.
By April 30, preliminary field tests indicated that the common Zaire strain of the Ebola virus was not responsible for the outbreak, leading health officials to suspect the rarer Bundibugyo strain. The WHO has recognised three Ebola strains that can cause significant outbreaks: Zaire, Sudan, and Bundibugyo.
By May 5, the situation had intensified, with reports confirming nearly 50 deaths in Mongbwalu, where the outbreak may have originated. The health minister of the DRC indicated that the body of the first victim, which had been moved to Mongbwalu, could have triggered the spread of the virus in the area.
Spread to Uganda
The outbreak crossed borders when a 59-year-old Congolese man was admitted to a hospital in Kampala, Uganda, on May 11, following his travel from the DRC. Tragically, he died shortly after admission, with subsequent tests confirming the presence of the Bundibugyo virus.

The WHO deployed a rapid response team to the affected regions in Ituri to investigate the outbreak further. By May 15, laboratory analyses indicated that eight out of thirteen blood samples from suspected cases tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain. This alarming development signalled a broader crisis, with the Congo Health Ministry reporting 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths by that date.
Global Health Response
The WHO officially declared the outbreak a public health emergency on May 17, urging nations that share borders with the DRC and Uganda to bolster surveillance and prepare health workers for potential Ebola cases. The agency clarified that while the situation was severe, it did not meet the criteria for a pandemic like COVID-19, advising against border closures.
On May 18, the outbreak’s complexity increased as an American doctor treating patients in Bunia became one of the confirmed cases. The medical director of the National Institute of Bio-Medical Research in the DRC, Dr. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, reported this development, underscoring the risks faced by health care providers in the region.
