The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has seen confirmed cases rise to at least 282, prompting health authorities in Brazil to investigate two potential cases linked to the crisis. These developments underscore the urgency of containment efforts as the outbreak continues to pose a significant threat to public health both locally and globally.

Rising Cases in Congo

As of late May 2026, the DRC’s eastern Ituri province has reported 264 of the confirmed Ebola cases, as stated by the Ministry of Health. The outbreak has been attributed to the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which currently lacks an approved treatment or vaccine. The health ministry has indicated that over 1,000 suspected cases are under scrutiny. Key challenges in managing the outbreak include timely detection of cases, effective isolation procedures, rigorous contact tracing, and ensuring safe burial practices.

Authorities have reported a contact tracing coverage rate of only 45%, with 220 suspected cases still being investigated. The situation is compounded by the need for enhanced infection prevention measures in health facilities.

Brazil’s Precautionary Measures

In Brazil, health officials are closely monitoring two patients who recently travelled from regions affected by the outbreak. One of the individuals, a Belgian national who arrived in Rio de Janeiro from Uganda, exhibited symptoms such as fever, chills, and cough. Initial tests conducted at the Evandro Chagas National Institute of Infectious Diseases revealed only malaria, but the patient remains under isolation until a definitive diagnosis can be established.

The second case involves a 37-year-old man who recently travelled to the DRC and has developed a high fever after arriving in Brazil. Testing has confirmed he has meningococcal meningitis, while investigations into possible Ebola infection are ongoing.

Hope Amidst the Crisis

Despite the alarming rise in cases, there is a glimmer of hope. During a recent visit to Bunia in eastern Congo, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that five health workers have successfully recovered from Ebola. This included four nurses discharged from a newly opened treatment centre in the province. Dr. Ghebreyesus emphasised the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, which can lead to survival even in the absence of specific antivirals.

One of the recovered patients, Baraka Bulambulu, shared his relief at overcoming the virus, stating, “Being able to come out of this alive is an immense source of happiness.” His experience highlights the resilience of individuals battling this disease, despite the stigma and fear surrounding Ebola.

Collaborative Efforts to Combat Ebola

In a joint statement released during Dr. Ghebreyesus’s visit, the DRC government and WHO reaffirmed their commitment to tackling the outbreak. They noted that while the Bundibugyo strain poses unique challenges, proven public health strategies remain effective. The statement outlined ongoing efforts to increase surveillance, testing, and care across affected regions, with the aim of halting transmission.

The partnership between the DRC government and international health organisations is critical in mobilising resources and ensuring that life-saving interventions reach communities in need. The need for transparent communication and community engagement is paramount to encourage public compliance with health recommendations.

Why it Matters

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC is a stark reminder of the fragility of global health security. The interconnectedness of our world means that health crises can quickly cross borders, as evidenced by Brazil’s precautionary measures. Strengthening health systems, investing in research for vaccines and treatments, and fostering international collaboration are essential to mitigate the impact of such outbreaks. The experiences of those recovering from Ebola highlight the importance of timely intervention and the human spirit’s capacity to endure even in the face of overwhelming odds.
