The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is spiralling out of control, with the World Health Organization (WHO) sounding alarms that the epidemic is advancing faster than response efforts can cope. As local populations clash with health authorities, the situation in the Ituri province grows increasingly dire, raising fears of a wider contagion across the region.
Outbreak Outpacing Response
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the WHO, revealed the alarming statistics during an online meeting with the African Union, where he described the outbreak as “outpacing” their efforts. With 220 suspected fatalities linked to the current crisis, he emphasised the urgent need for neighbouring nations to mobilise resources and prepare for potential spillover.
“While we are urgently scaling up our operations, the reality is we’re lagging behind the spread of this disease,” Dr Tedros stated, asserting the critical nature of the situation. He is set to visit the DRC alongside Chikwe Ihekweazu, the executive director of the WHO’s health emergencies programme, in a bid to assess and accelerate the response.
