In a concerning development, US health authorities have confirmed that an American citizen has contracted the Ebola virus while working in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This case, which emerged over the weekend, has prompted officials to implement proactive measures aimed at safeguarding US citizens. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now coordinating enhanced travel screenings for individuals arriving from the affected regions of DRC and Uganda.
Current Situation and Response
On Monday, the CDC announced that the infected individual is being evacuated to Germany for treatment after testing positive for Ebola. Satish K. Pillai, the CDC’s incident manager for the Ebola response, stated during a press briefing that the individual began exhibiting symptoms over the weekend. In addition to this case, six other individuals are undergoing evacuation to receive treatment or monitoring.
The CDC noted that approximately 25 US personnel are currently stationed in the DRC, with additional support being dispatched from Atlanta, Georgia. This proactive approach comes in light of the ongoing Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak, which has already seen ten confirmed cases and a significant number of suspected cases and fatalities, including at least four health workers.
Enhanced Travel Screening Measures
Citing the serious nature of the outbreak, the CDC, alongside the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), announced new public health screening procedures for travellers arriving in the US from the DRC and Uganda. Non-US passport holders who have been in these countries or South Sudan in the last 21 days will face entry restrictions.

Airlines and port officials have been instructed to identify and manage travellers who may have been in contact with the virus. This includes bolstering measures related to contact tracing, laboratory testing capabilities, and hospital readiness across the nation. These enhanced protocols are set to last for an initial period of 30 days, with the CDC prepared to adjust as necessary based on the evolving situation.

The current outbreak is particularly alarming as it marks only the third incidence of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which has a mortality rate that can range from 25% to 50%. Unlike the Zaire strain, which is regarded as treatable and was responsible for a massive outbreak between 2018 and 2020, the Bundibugyo strain lacks targeted vaccines or effective treatments. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified this situation as a “public health emergency of international concern,” underscoring the potential global implications of the outbreak.
The WHO traced the first suspected case to a health worker who developed symptoms on 24 April, suggesting that the virus may have been circulating undetected for some time. Tragically, one of the infected individuals later travelled to Kampala, Uganda, where they succumbed to the illness. However, the WHO has stated that there is no ongoing transmission detected in Uganda at this time.

Satish Pillai emphasised that the situation is “highly dynamic,” necessitating ongoing assessment from US health officials. This recent Ebola case follows closely on the heels of another public health scare, where 16 Americans were evacuated from a cruise ship due to a hantavirus outbreak. Such incidents highlight an alarming trend of infectious diseases becoming increasingly prevalent, raising questions about global health preparedness.
