Recent attacks by an Islamic State-affiliated militia in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), have resulted in the deaths of over 30 individuals, further complicating efforts to manage an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the region. The surge in violence, particularly around the town of Beni—one of the epicentres of the epidemic—has not only claimed lives but also instilled fear, prompting patients to flee from treatment facilities.
Deadly Assaults in Beni
In a series of brutal raids early on Wednesday, at least ten people were killed in three villages surrounding Beni, as the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) launched a coordinated attack. Local leader Isaac Kavalami reported that the ADF rebels set fire to homes and motorcycles while abducting civilians, with the total number of kidnappings still unaccounted for.
