Grahame Madge, a spokesman for the Met Office, characterised this El Niño as a “significant event” and “possibly one of the strongest we’ve had in recent decades.” However, he also cautioned that the connection between El Niño and its effects on the UK remains uncertain, given that it is merely one of several climate drivers influencing local weather patterns.
Madge elaborated, stating, “Typically, when an El Niño occurs, it can increase the likelihood of more unsettled conditions later in the year, including a higher chance of milder, wetter, and windier weather during autumn and early winter.” He also noted that at times, El Niño can lead to colder and calmer conditions in late winter.
Global Temperature Spike Anticipated
The Met Office has indicated a “high likelihood” that the ongoing El Niño will result in a temporary surge in global annual temperatures, potentially making the upcoming year the hottest since records began in 1850. Madge explained that while some regions may experience warmer weather, others might remain cooler due to the complex nature of global weather patterns.
El Niño typically manifests every two to seven years and lasts approximately nine to twelve months. While it increases the risk of drought in regions such as Indonesia, Australia, and parts of South America, it can also lead to wetter conditions in other areas, including the southern United States.

This warming of the Pacific Ocean alters atmospheric circulation, shifting the position of the jet stream and changing rainfall patterns, which can affect temperatures and precipitation thousands of miles away.

The repercussions of El Niño extend beyond immediate weather changes, particularly affecting food supply chains in the UK. With developing nations often being the source of essential food imports, agricultural workers are increasingly facing challenges due to climate change. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) reported that 13% of the UK’s food imports, valued at £8.9 billion in 2025, come from these vulnerable regions.
Shamika Mone, a rice farmer from India and president of the Intercontinental Network of Organic Farmers, highlighted the challenges posed by extreme heat, stating, “Extreme heat makes the already difficult job of farming even harder. There are real fears that hotter, drier weather caused by a super El Niño could damage harvests.” She urged governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide climate finance to smallholders to enhance their resilience.
Dr Ella Gilbert, a climate scientist formerly with the British Antarctic Survey, warned that the developing El Niño could exacerbate existing supply chain disruptions, further straining families in the UK already facing a cost-of-living crisis.
