In a transformative shift towards sustainability, the landscape gardening sector is gradually moving away from petrol-powered tools in favour of electric alternatives. This change is largely driven by growing concerns over noise pollution and environmental impact, prompting various cities across the United States to enact bans on gas-powered landscaping equipment. As this trend gains momentum, companies are innovating to meet the demand for quieter, cleaner solutions that not only enhance worker comfort but also promote longer working hours.
The Push for Electric Alternatives
The soundscape of a typical day in Southern California is often punctuated by the roar of petrol-powered gardening tools. However, cities are increasingly recognising the drawbacks of these machines, particularly their contribution to noise pollution and carbon emissions. In response, many municipalities are either implementing outright bans on gas-powered tools or incentivising the adoption of electric models.
Participating in a training session hosted by the American Green Zone Alliance (AGZA), I strapped on an electric backpack leaf blower, surprisingly light compared to my usual equipment. While I fumbled through my initial attempts, the machine’s quieter operation was immediately noticeable. The sound it emitted was a higher pitch, less jarring than the rumble of traditional petrol blowers, signalling a welcome shift for both workers and residents.
New Entrants into the Market
The transition to electric gardening equipment has spurred new players to enter the market. Notably, Whisper Aero, an aerospace start-up, has pivoted from its core business of electric propulsion systems to produce electric leaf blowers. Following the pandemic, the company recognised an opportunity to leverage its high-performance fans in landscaping.
“Our technology is cleaner, quieter, and more efficient than existing air-moving solutions,” stated Andrew Terajewicz, Whisper Aero’s director of air management. With a battery life of up to 50 minutes at full power, Whisper Aero’s handheld blower is positioned at the premium end of the market, but its reduced noise output may justify the higher price tag. Dan Mabe, founder of AGZA, remarked, “It is so ultra quiet yet powerful that the brain has a hard time understanding what’s happening,” highlighting the product’s appeal.
Challenges of Transitioning to Electric
Despite the innovations, the dominance of petrol-powered machinery remains unchallenged, particularly among professional landscapers. The superior power of petrol tools significantly reduces the time required to complete tasks, which is a crucial factor when efficiency is paramount. Terajewicz noted that heavy-duty petrol blowers can achieve a blowing force of approximately 50 newtons, while the Whisper Aero model typically operates at about half that capacity.
Moreover, runtime presents a significant hurdle. Carlos Camarena, a supervisor for a California landscaping firm, explained that while they utilise electric tools in areas where petrol machines are restricted, they prefer petrol when available due to the longer operating times of gas-powered equipment. Currently, electric batteries used by his team last about 30 minutes, necessitating multiple batteries and constant recharging to keep operations running smoothly.
The financial implications of transitioning to electric tools are also considerable. One landscaper estimated that fully converting their equipment could cost around £7,540. While some local governments offer incentives to help ease this financial burden, the support may not sufficiently offset the costs, particularly for small businesses and sole proprietors who face additional challenges in storage and charging logistics.
Industry Giants Embrace Electric Innovation
Even with these challenges, major manufacturers are investing heavily in electric technology. Stihl, a powerhouse in the power tool industry, is aiming for battery-operated equipment to comprise 35% of its sales by next year, with a target of 80% by 2035. The company is on track to meet its European targets, although progress in the United States has been slower.
Stihl recently unveiled a new battery system that incorporates tabless lithium cells, which provide 60% more peak power than traditional cells, enabling faster charging and reducing the number of batteries needed on-site. Paul Hicks, Stihl’s senior marketing and product manager, emphasised their commitment to offering solutions that suit a variety of needs, acknowledging that in some instances, petrol tools may still be preferable.
