Elephant Deaths in Kenya Spark Alarm Over Pesticide Use in Agriculture

Recent reports of the untimely deaths of 15 elephants near Amboseli National Park have raised urgent concerns regarding the potential role of pesticides used in local agriculture. The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has indicated that some of the deceased elephants displayed signs of poisoning, possibly linked to cyanide found in agricultural chemicals. However, the narrative is more complex than initial findings suggest, with local farmers and conservationists expressing skepticism about the causes of these tragic incidents.

Tragic Discoveries in Amboseli

Between June 24 and July 24, the carcasses of 15 elephants were discovered in the vicinity of Amboseli National Park, a key wildlife corridor that connects to Tsavo National Park. According to Dr. Isaac Lekolool, Kenya’s chief wildlife veterinarian, tests revealed traces of cyanide in the animals’ stomachs. While this points towards possible poisoning, Dr. Lekolool has stated that the full circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear.

“This is unprecedented,” he noted, highlighting that the unusual timing and circumstances make it challenging to pinpoint the cause. His team is currently investigating the likelihood that the elephants may have ingested toxins from pesticides applied to nearby tomato farms in the Kimana region.

Farmers Voice Concerns

Local farmers, however, are questioning the conclusions drawn by the KWS. Daniel Nina, who represents landowners in the area, expressed disbelief at the situation, saying, “We have coexisted with these animals for decades without any incidents like this. Why is it happening now?”

Tomato farming in Kimana benefits from streams fed by Mount Kilimanjaro, and these crops support markets, including those in Nairobi. Yet, the use of pesticides has raised alarms. A report from the Kenyan food safety initiative, Route to Food, identified a farmer in the area using an insecticide containing cyanide, a substance that is illegal in Kenya yet still finds its way across the border from Tanzania.

Wangunyu Njuguna, the report’s author, highlighted the lax enforcement of regulations. “There’s no one checking what I buy across the border,” he stated. “I can purchase anything without any scrutiny.”

Questioning the Poisoning Theory

Despite the findings linking pesticides to the elephant deaths, conservationists urge caution. Paula Kahumbu, a prominent conservationist, has pointed out the lack of detailed evidence supporting the pesticide theory. “The information available does not convincingly support the claim that pesticides are to blame,” she remarked.

Experts have noted inconsistencies in the behaviour typically observed in elephants, stating that males are more likely to raid crops. However, of the elephants that died, only one was an adult male, raising further questions about the pesticide hypothesis. Nina added that previous cases of poisoning typically affected other wildlife, such as zebras and antelopes, rather than elephants. “How could cyanide kill the elephants while leaving zebras and antelopes unharmed?” he questioned.

The Broader Context of Human-Wildlife Conflict

Human-wildlife conflict has long plagued communities living adjacent to conservation areas in Kenya. Stephen Michael, a local tomato farmer, recounted experiences of elephants raiding his crops, causing significant financial losses. “I lost cabbages worth almost $1,535,” he lamented, highlighting the economic pressures on farmers that often lead to tensions with wildlife.

Frank Pope, CEO of Save the Elephants, emphasised that the primary threat to elephants in Amboseli is no longer poaching for ivory but rather land encroachment for agriculture and development. “People are moving into areas where there’s sufficient water and fertile soil, which coincides with the habitats that elephants rely on,” he explained.

As investigations continue, the root cause of the elephant deaths remains elusive, leaving both local wildlife and the communities that coexist with them in a precarious position.
