Construction has officially commenced on the Enbridge Sunrise pipeline expansion project, a significant infrastructure initiative near Prince George, British Columbia. Federal Minister of Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, announced on Monday that the $4 billion investment is now underway, a mere three months after receiving the green light from the Canadian government. “The Sunrise Expansion project has gone from approval to groundbreaking in just three months, showing how in 2026 Canada has gone from delay to delivery,” remarked Hodgson during the announcement. This ambitious project will extend the existing West Coast natural gas pipeline by adding 139 kilometres of new pipeline and 11 looping segments, facilitating the movement of natural gas from the abundant resources in northern B.C. to the southern regions where demand is highest.
Stewart Muir, representing Resource Works, highlighted the scale of the project, stating, “It’s a 42-inch pipe; it’s as big as they build, and it’s going to connect the north of B.C. where we have abundant, practically unlimited natural gas, to the south, where we use more of that gas than anywhere else.”

The construction phase is expected to generate approximately 2,500 jobs within British Columbia, with 1,300 of those positions being local to the region.
