Construction has officially commenced on the much-anticipated Enbridge Sunrise pipeline expansion situated near Prince George, British Columbia. Federal Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson announced the initiation of this significant $4 billion endeavour, just three months post-approval by the Canadian government. In his remarks on Monday, Hodgson praised the swift transition from approval to construction, stating, “The Sunrise Expansion project has gone from approval to groundbreaking in just three months, showing how in 2026 Canada has gone from delay to delivery.”
Project Overview
This expansive initiative will enhance the existing West Coast natural gas pipeline, incorporating an additional 139 kilometres of new pipeline along with 11 looping segments stretching from Chetwynd to the U.S. border. The project is jointly owned by Enbridge and 38 First Nations, highlighting a collaborative approach to energy development in the region.
Stewart Muir from Resource Works described the pipeline as a substantial 42-inch conduit, emphasising its capacity to connect the abundant natural gas reserves in northern B.C. to the south, where demand is highest. “It’s as big as they build, and it’s going to connect the north of B.C. where we have abundant, practically unlimited natural gas, to the south, where we use more of that gas than anywhere else,” Muir noted.

The construction phase is expected to generate approximately 2,500 jobs within British Columbia, with 1,300 positions specifically allocated to the local area. This influx of employment opportunities is particularly crucial, considering recent announcements regarding job losses in the region’s forestry sector. Just days before this pipeline project’s launch, Canfor revealed plans to close the Northwood pulp mill in Prince George, which will result in the loss of 300 jobs.

Minister Hodgson acknowledged these concerns, affirming that the government is attentive to the needs of the sector. “We’ve provided almost $2 billion to the industry across Canada in the last year and a bit, and we’ll continue to monitor the situation. The key is we need to find sustainable pathways forward,” he stated.
