The National Drought Group reports that 71.3% of the country is under drought status, with the North East and Yorkshire now designated as experiencing prolonged dry weather. As drought conditions worsen, the UK Health Security Agency has issued amber heat health alerts for all of England, predicting temperatures could soar to 38°C this week. These alerts will remain in effect until Friday, 14 July at 9pm. The Met Office has also released an amber extreme heat warning for various regions, including the Midlands, London, the South East, Yorkshire, and the East of England.

The current weather patterns indicate that the UK is poised to experience its hottest summer on record, with preliminary data showing an average temperature of 16.48°C for meteorological summer so far—1.88°C above the 1991-2020 average. Met Office Chief Forecaster Jason Kelly noted, “Heat will gradually build this week, with temperatures reaching into the mid-30s Celsius across a wide area, signalling a significant heatwave for England and Wales. The prevailing high-pressure system will facilitate this warming trend, coupled with warm winds from southern Europe.”
