A Call for Accountability
The open letter, released on Tuesday, highlights what these organisations describe as a concerted effort by Zeldin to dismantle crucial environmental safeguards. “No EPA administrator in history – Democratic or Republican – has so brazenly betrayed the agency’s core mission,” the letter asserts. Under Zeldin’s stewardship, the EPA has reportedly weakened numerous regulations designed to combat the climate crisis, preserve clean air and water, and promote public health.
The groups accuse Zeldin of slashing essential funding and reducing staffing levels, actions they argue have prioritised corporate interests over the well-being of American citizens. “He has rigged the system to put corporate polluters first, at the expense of our health,” they contend.
The Growing Opposition
This letter echoes earlier discontent from both the public and former EPA staff, who have voiced concerns over Zeldin’s leadership. In June, a group of current and former employees signed a “Declaration of Dissent” that condemned his handling of scientific programming and the treatment of staff. Some of these employees faced punitive measures, although an internal review later stated that their actions did not breach ethical standards.
Gretchen Goldman, president of the Union of Concerned Scientists, expressed the necessity for a leader who can confront the climate crisis effectively. She stated, “The public deserves an EPA administrator who will face the challenge… head-on with proven policy solutions, not actively serve as an agent of destruction beholden to the whims of oil, gas, and chemical industry executives.”
A Controversial Agenda
The mounting pressure on Zeldin follows a petition initiated by leaders of the Make America Healthy Again movement, which demanded his removal in light of his environmental rollbacks. Following this, Zeldin has been seen engaging with supporters of the movement, raising further eyebrows about his commitment to the EPA’s core mission.
In response to the criticisms, Brigit Hirsch, an EPA spokesperson, reaffirmed the agency’s stance, stating it maintains a “zero-tolerance policy for career bureaucrats unlawfully undermining” its agenda as sanctioned by the electorate. The Trump administration has consistently defended its drastic regulatory rollbacks, arguing that it is possible to safeguard the environment while simultaneously fostering industrial growth.
Next month, Zeldin is set to open a climate conference in Washington D.C., organised by the Heartland Institute, a group known for its controversial stance on climate change. The institute, which has received funding from major fossil fuel companies, rejects the scientific consensus on the urgent need for action against climate change.
