Stephen Fai is on a mission to create a digital parallel to Canada, a concept that transcends mere replication. This ambitious project aims to construct a comprehensive online repository where data about buildings, communities, and landscapes can be continually updated to reflect real-world changes. For architects, urban planners, and community leaders, this digital twin offers a means to monitor existing structures and explore innovative possibilities. Dr. Fai, the director of the Carleton Immersive Media Studio at Carleton University in Ottawa, believes this platform can serve as a vital tool for those engaged in shaping our built environment.

The Genesis of a Digital Twin

The term “digital twin” was first introduced by a NASA engineer in 2010, but Dr. Fai envisions something much grander. His platform isn’t just about creating virtual representations of buildings and roads; it encompasses a vast array of data, from sensor readings and environmental metrics to demographic information. “It can be anything relevant to the problem you are trying to solve,” Dr. Fai explains, underscoring the platform’s adaptability.

This month marks a significant milestone as Dr. Fai and his team unveil the foundational computer code for users to access the platform. In tandem with this release, they have established a not-for-profit organisation, Collab Digital Twins, designed to facilitate user engagement and collaboration. “We expect tech-savvy groups to download the application and begin building upon it,” he anticipates. “Others may approach us for assistance in getting started.”

A Shift in Data Use in the Construction Sector

The emergence of this digital twin initiative aligns with a global trend towards enhanced data visualisation within the construction industry. The shift from paper blueprints to digital representations began in the 1980s, paving the way for complex building information models that encapsulate detailed knowledge about a structure’s features and functions. The digital twin concept further advances this by linking models to real-time data streams from their physical counterparts, allowing for dynamic updates as buildings evolve.

The Carleton team has developed a platform that encourages collaboration, enabling users to interact with their own projects alongside publicly available data related to specific locations. Dr. Fai emphasises the importance of creating an inclusive environment where both commercial and open-source tools coexist. “What we are building is a common ground rather than a replacement for existing tools,” he asserts.

Addressing Barriers to Access

Traditional commercial digital twin platforms often come with steep licensing fees, effectively excluding a significant portion of the professionals involved in Canada’s built environment: small businesses, non-profits, rural municipalities, heritage organisations, and Indigenous communities. The Carleton team’s approach seeks to democratise access. By creating a common format, users can integrate proprietary projects with public data, which could include geographical risks like flooding or wildfire, as well as municipal statistics on housing and transport.

Dr. Fai illustrates this potential with an example: “Imagine an architect in Sudbury needing to work on a project in Ottawa but lacking access to vital data. They could log into the digital twin, obtain zoning and statistical information, and upload their own designs into the relevant geospatial area.”

Practical Applications and Future Developments

As the platform continues to evolve, the Carleton team has piloted its capabilities using buildings on their own campus. They demonstrated how the digital twin can monitor energy and water usage, occupancy rates, and traffic patterns, providing a comprehensive overview of public space management. Each version of the digital twin is tailored to individual users, ensuring secure and personalised access to information.

The initiative has garnered support from the National Research Council, which recognises the platform as a vital step in making digitalisation tangible and practical. Farzad Jalaei, a research officer at the NRC, emphasises the need to make digital tools appealing in a sector historically resistant to change.

Looking ahead, a critical phase of the project will see the platform adopted by the Department of National Defence to manage approximately 22,000 non-classified assets across Canada. John Hale, who heads digitalisation efforts for the department, believes that the Carleton platform will provide essential foundational support for this endeavour.
