In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, at least seven individuals have lost their lives in Russia following what officials have described as the most significant Ukrainian drone attack of the year. Approximately 822 drones were deployed, with 600 targeting Moscow, marking a historic surge in aerial assaults. In Russia, the governor of the Rostov region reported that five people died due to overnight strikes, while a woman was killed when a bus was hit in Belgorod. In the Moscow region, an 83-year-old man was a victim of a drone strike. The assault on the Wildberries facility in Koledino, situated about 25 kilometres from Moscow’s centre, resulted in injuries to three individuals, as confirmed by Mayor Sergei Sobyanin.
Wildberries, often referred to as Russia’s equivalent of Amazon, has been a focal target since July, as Ukraine has aimed to disrupt the logistical networks supporting the Russian military. The Ukrainian defence ministry indicated that the recent strikes have rendered seven out of the ten largest Wildberries logistics centres inoperative.
Ukraine Under Fire
The situation in Ukraine is equally dire, with Russian missile strikes claiming the lives of at least seven individuals and wounding over 39 others. In the Zaporizhzhia region, a guided aerial bomb struck a private residence, resulting in the deaths of a 66-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman. Additional casualties were reported in Kryvyi Rih and across Sumy, Donetsk, and Kherson, where civilian areas have been targeted. In Kyiv, air-raid sirens were triggered multiple times as Russian forces launched attacks aimed at critical infrastructure, including facilities associated with the production of military components.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the scale of the assault, noting that 13 regions were attacked within the week, with over 1,550 drones and numerous guided bombs deployed. He condemned the Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure, emphasising the ongoing threat to non-combatants.
The Role of Western Support
As the conflict has evolved, Ukraine has increasingly relied on Western military aid, notably from the United States, which has supplied Patriot missiles aimed at intercepting Russian projectiles.
