Escalating Heat Poses Severe Risks for Older Adults, New Study Reveals

A recent study published in The Lancet has highlighted alarming trends regarding the effects of extreme heat on individuals aged 60 and over. Researchers from Stanford University assessed how global warming is influencing various age groups, revealing that the threat of heat-related health issues for older adults has been significantly underestimated. As temperatures continue to rise, the findings underscore the urgent need for targeted strategies to protect vulnerable populations.

The Growing Heat Crisis

The study reveals that if global temperatures increase by 1.5°C, a staggering 22 per cent of the world’s older adult population could face conditions exceeding their body’s ability to cope with extreme heat. This situation, termed “heat-compensability limit exceedance,” means that many older individuals may struggle to cool themselves effectively, placing them at serious risk. Current data indicates that Earth’s average temperature is approximately 1.19°C above pre-industrial levels, with 2024 projected to be one of the hottest years ever recorded.

“As the planet warms, understanding where, when, and to what extent environmental conditions will exceed human heat tolerance becomes crucial,” the study asserts. The research warns that rising temperatures will create intolerable heat conditions affecting a far larger segment of the population than previously thought.

Regions at Greatest Risk

Particularly concerning is the situation in South Asia and the Persian Gulf, where older adults face sustained exposure to extreme heat. For instance, India is identified as having the largest population exposed to over 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually, with an estimated 648.4 million individuals affected at a 3°C increase. The study emphasises the need for immediate action in regions such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger, which exceed both absolute and proportional exposure thresholds.

Moreover, it is projected that over 80 per cent of older adults in these areas will experience more than 180 hours of heat exceedance each year. The severe implications of this are clear: prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to critical health complications, particularly for those with pre-existing conditions.

An Ageing Population in Peril

The implications of these findings are compounded by demographic trends. The global population of individuals aged 60 and older is expected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, constituting 21 per cent of the total population. Shockingly, more than two-thirds of this demographic will reside in low to middle-income countries, many of which are already grappling with the challenges posed by climate change and escalating heat stress.

The study cautions that by neglecting the unique vulnerabilities of older adults, previous models may have underestimated the frequency and geographical spread of heat stress-related health risks. This oversight has significant ramifications for public health planning and climate adaptation strategies.

Rising Mortality Rates

The 2025 report from the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), indicates a concerning trend in heat-related mortality. Since the 1990s, heat-related deaths have surged by 23 per cent, averaging around 546,000 fatalities annually. In 2024, the average person experienced 16 days of dangerous heat that would not have occurred without climate change, with vulnerable groups like infants and older adults facing even higher exposure.

This data paints a stark picture of a world where climate change is not merely an environmental issue but a pressing public health crisis.

As climate change progresses, the findings of this study compel us to rethink our approach to public health and climate resilience. With an ageing global population facing unprecedented heat challenges, it is imperative that governments, health organisations, and communities implement effective strategies to safeguard the health of older adults. Ignoring the unique vulnerabilities of this demographic not only endangers lives but also places immense strain on healthcare systems worldwide. Proactive measures are essential to mitigate the risks and ensure that the most vulnerable members of society are adequately protected from the escalating threats of climate change.
