U.S. Military Engagement Off Pakistan
In a separate but related incident, the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova was reportedly hit by a missile while navigating the Gulf of Oman. Sources indicate that the vessel was targeted by a U.S. helicopter which fired a Hellfire missile at the ship’s rudder after it allegedly attempted to evade a U.S. blockade aimed at Iran-linked shipping. This attack has not yet elicited a response from U.S. Central Command.
If verified, this would mark the twelfth vessel to be attacked by U.S. forces since the blockade was reinstated in April, with three incidents occurring since the reimplementation of restrictions on July 14. The Vela Nova was approximately 71 nautical miles from the Pakistani coast when it was struck, as reported by maritime security sources.
Decline in Shipping Traffic
The frequency of maritime traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea has plummeted by over 50% since earlier Houthi attacks on shipping in 2023. In light of the newly imposed blockade, an average of only 32 vessels passed through this critical strait last week, a stark decline from the 50 ships that typically transited prior to the embargo.
Notably, the Tihamah was not owned or operated by Saudi interests; rather, it had departed from the Yemeni government-held port of al-Mokha just days before the attack. The situation in the Strait of Hormuz is even more severe, with only six ships reported to have passed through on Monday, compared to a pre-war average of 130 to 140.
