In a dramatic escalation of hostilities in the Persian Gulf, unclaimed air strikes struck various locations across southern Iran on Thursday, coinciding with the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. These attacks have reignited speculation about potential aggressors targeting Iran, as the country’s leadership refrains from naming any specific culprits. While Gulf Arab states, which have been the focus of Iranian hostility since the onset of the war on February 28, have yet to comment, the situation remains tense as regional and international powers navigate the complexities of this conflict.

Unidentified Strikes and Regional Ramifications

The air strikes, reported to have occurred shortly after 6:30 a.m. local time, followed the conclusion of a U.S. military operation that had targeted 90 locations in Iran. Iranian media swiftly reported explosions in key provinces, including Bushehr and Sistan and Baluchestan, as well as in the cities of Ahvaz and Chabahar. Despite inquiries, the U.S. Central Command did not provide further details on the situation.

In response, Iran launched a series of retaliatory strikes across the Middle East, targeting Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and Qatar, which prompted missile alerts and sent residents scrambling for shelter. One individual in Kuwait was reportedly injured due to the incoming threats as air defence systems engaged. This exchange of military actions has put immense strain on the already fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington.

U.S. and Gulf Cooperation Amidst Rising Tensions

Amid these developments, U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his stance that the interim ceasefire agreement is effectively over while maintaining that discussions for a permanent resolution will continue. This sentiment was echoed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE, who met with Kuwaiti officials shortly after the Iranian strikes, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts in the region.

Throughout the conflict, both Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been implicated in air strikes against Iran, particularly following attacks on their energy infrastructure. Conversely, Israel has remained largely silent regarding recent military actions against Iran, although Defence Minister Israel Katz warned of potential military operations should the situation escalate further.

Iranian Warnings and Regional Dynamics

Iranian officials have not shied away from issuing stern warnings to the UAE regarding its alleged collaboration with U.S. military operations. Esmail Kousari, a member of Iran’s parliament, suggested that the UAE would face repercussions for its involvement, reflecting the deep-seated animosity that characterises Iran’s relationship with its Gulf neighbours.

The U.S. maintains a substantial presence in the Gulf, including military bases in Bahrain, which houses the Navy’s 5th Fleet. As tensions rise, Iran insists on its claim to control the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil trade, despite long-standing international consensus regarding its status as an open waterway. The Joint Maritime Information Centre, overseen by the U.S. Navy, has recently advised vessels to avoid Iranian-controlled waters, further complicating navigation in the region.

Why it Matters

The recent unclaimed strikes and subsequent military exchanges underscore the precarious balance of power in the Persian Gulf. With the potential for wider conflict looming, the region’s stability hangs in the balance, impacting global energy prices and security. As diplomatic efforts continue to unfold, the actions of both regional actors and international powers will be critical in shaping the future of Iran-Gulf relations and the broader geopolitical landscape.
