The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has escalated dramatically following a series of military strikes and retaliatory actions in the Middle East. The US military has conducted self-defence strikes on Iranian positions in response to missile attacks targeting Kuwait and Bahrain, while Iran has retaliated against US forces, further complicating the fragile regional landscape.

US Strikes Target Iranian Military Assets

In a statement released by US Central Command (Centcom), the military confirmed that it had launched airstrikes on Qeshm Island, strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz. These strikes were described as a direct response to what Centcom termed “attempted attacks by Iran across the Middle East.” Reports indicate that the US engaged and destroyed an unladen oil tanker, claiming it was part of a naval blockade initiated on April 13. This vessel, flagged under Botswana, was allegedly targeted after its crew failed to heed multiple warnings.

The strikes also involved intercepting ballistic missiles and drones fired by Iran, which were aimed at civilian maritime traffic in the region. Centcom reported that three attack drones were shot down before they could inflict damage on vessels transiting these critical waters.
