In a remarkable turn of fortune, a woman from Ethiopia’s Harari Regional State has given birth to quintuplets after 12 years of struggling to conceive. Bedriya Adem, aged 35, expressed immense joy at welcoming four sons and a daughter into her family, describing the moment as a profound blessing. The delivery took place at Hiwot Fana Specialised Hospital, where all five newborns are reported to be in good health.
A Long-Awaited Joy
Bedriya and her husband have longed for children, and her emotional journey has been fraught with challenges. “I cannot express my happiness in words,” she shared, reflecting on the years filled with disappointment and despair. Until this miraculous event, Bedriya often felt the weight of societal pressure and personal anguish over her inability to conceive, which she described as a source of deep psychological pain.
The medical director of the hospital, Dr Mohammed Nur Abdulahi, noted that the quintuplets were delivered via Caesarean section. He confirmed that the babies, each weighing between 1.3 and 1.4 kg (approximately 3 lb), are healthy and under careful observation. Dr Abdulahi further explained that the likelihood of conceiving quintuplets naturally is extraordinarily rare, estimated at just one in 55 million, emphasising the uniqueness of this case.
A Natural Miracle
Interestingly, Bedriya’s pregnancy occurred without the use of assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF), a procedure that could increase the odds of multiple births. The hospital does not offer IVF services, making this case even more remarkable. The mother had received comprehensive prenatal care and was aware of her multiple pregnancies, initially being informed of four babies before the unexpected fifth child was born.
“I prayed for just one child, and Allah gave me five,” Bedriya remarked, illustrating the depth of her hopes and faith during years of waiting.

Despite her overwhelming joy, Bedriya faces the daunting task of raising five infants. As a subsistence farmer, she expressed uncertainty about how to provide for her newly expanded family. Yet, she remains optimistic, believing that both her community and government support will help her navigate this new chapter of her life. “What I endured in the past feels like a distant dream,” she added, highlighting her resilience and hope for the future.
The quintuplets have been affectionately named Naif, Ammar, Munzir, Nazira, and Ansar, collectively referred to as her “five blessings.” Their arrival not only brings joy to Bedriya and her husband but also inspires the local community, showcasing the power of hope and perseverance.
