The sweltering conditions reached a peak on June 23, when the country recorded its highest temperature ever at 44.3°C (111.7°F) in the southwest. The extreme weather has been linked to at least 5,700 excess deaths in June alone, according to France’s public health agency.
In a distressing turn of events, two subsequent heat waves in July exacerbated a historic wildfire situation in southwestern France, forcing the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people—a response reminiscent of some of the largest evacuations since World War II.
A Drying United Kingdom
Meanwhile, the UK is gearing up for another wave of extreme heat, with half of England and all of Wales currently classified as being in drought. Provisional data indicates that July was the driest on record for England and Wales, dating back to 1836, with 19 counties experiencing no rainfall throughout the month.
The health impacts of this heat wave are significant, with warnings issued about increased strain on healthcare services, particularly for the elderly and vulnerable populations. The previous two heat waves in May and June were linked to over 2,800 excess deaths.
