The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has issued an evacuation alert for the small community of Draper, located approximately 12 kilometres southeast of Fort McMurray, due to rising water levels caused by an ice jam in the Clearwater River. The alert was announced shortly after 9 a.m. on Tuesday, signalling potential overland flooding in the area.

Residents on High Alert

While no formal evacuation order has been put in place, local authorities are urging residents to prepare for a swift evacuation if circumstances worsen. The municipality has advised individuals to have an emergency plan ready, including the assembly of a 72-hour emergency kit. Residents are also encouraged to communicate with neighbours, particularly those who may require assistance in an evacuation scenario.

“We are asking everyone to stay vigilant and take this alert seriously,” a municipal spokesperson stated. “Preparedness is key, and we want everyone to be ready if the situation escalates.”

Safety Precautions and Recommendations

The municipality has emphasised the importance of staying away from riverbanks and any flowing water while the situation develops. Residents are encouraged to frequently check the town’s official website and social media channels for updates regarding the potential flooding, as well as to monitor provincial resources dedicated to river conditions.

Additionally, residents should review their home or tenant insurance policies to ensure they are covered in the event of flooding. The Alberta Emergency Alert app is also recommended for timely updates and alerts.

Community Impact and Demographics

Draper is one of the smallest communities in the Wood Buffalo region, with approximately 137 residents according to the 2025 census. The close-knit nature of the community may play a significant role in how residents respond to the alert and support one another during this uncertain time.

Why it Matters

The situation in Draper underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in northern Alberta regarding climate-related events and their potential impact on local populations. As weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, the importance of preparedness and community resilience becomes paramount. This alert not only serves as a warning for Draper residents but also highlights the need for broader discussions on environmental management and emergency preparedness across the region.
