The Northwest Territories is facing a growing emergency as residents of Fort Simpson have been ordered to evacuate due to an advancing wildfire. The situation has escalated rapidly, compelling local officials to take decisive action late Sunday.

Wildfire Details and Evacuation Notice

The territorial government has confirmed that the Dehcho fire is currently raging approximately seven kilometres west of Fort Simpson Airport. Spanning an area of about 4.2 square kilometres, the wildfire’s proximity to the community has raised significant concerns. In light of this, officials from the Village of Fort Simpson have urged the town’s 1,300 residents to seek refuge at the Multiplex Arena in Yellowknife, located around 630 kilometres to the west.

In a statement, the City of Yellowknife announced that the Multiplex would serve as a reception and accommodation centre for evacuees. For those wishing to leave by air, the local recreation centre has been designated as the departure point. Residents have been advised to prepare adequately, ensuring they carry sufficient food, water, and fuel for their families. Fortunately, gas stations in the area will remain operational to facilitate safe road evacuations.

Firefighting Efforts Underway

According to the latest updates from the territory’s wildfire management team, efforts are ongoing to suppress the fire’s spread, particularly towards Fort Simpson. Airtankers and helicopters have been deployed to target critical areas on the fire’s northern and northeastern edges. However, ground crews have been temporarily sidelined due to safety concerns stemming from the wildfire activity.

Earlier, an evacuation alert had already been issued as a precautionary measure when the fire was first detected approximately 10 kilometres from the airport. The situation has been exacerbated by dry conditions, with temperatures soaring to nearly 35 degrees Celsius and wind gusts reaching up to 30 kilometres per hour.

Community Impact and Safety Measures

The recent evacuation order comes in the wake of a tragic incident last week, when a bird dog plane, which was engaged in firefighting efforts, crashed about 50 kilometres from Fort Simpson, resulting in the loss of three lives. This devastating event has prompted expressions of sympathy from both Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson and Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The local officials have reiterated that while the situation is serious, there have been no reports of damage to infrastructure or homes as of yet. The community remains on high alert, with residents encouraged to stay informed and adhere to safety protocols.

Why it Matters

The evacuation of Fort Simpson highlights the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires in the Northwest Territories, a trend linked to climate change and shifting weather patterns. As communities grapple with the implications of such natural disasters, the need for improved emergency preparedness and response strategies becomes ever more critical. The resilience of Fort Simpson’s residents will be tested in the coming days, as they navigate this challenging situation while seeking safety and stability for their families.
