The ambitious plans of tech titans Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos to launch orbital data centres into space are facing fierce scrutiny from environmental experts and advocacy groups. A new petition submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) raises alarm over the potential pollution these projects could unleash, warning that the consequences might be “catastrophic” for our planet. With millions of new satellites on the horizon, concerns about their environmental impact are mounting.

Pollution Fears from Orbital Projects

Musk’s SpaceX and Bezos’s Blue Origin, among others, are pushing for the approval of vast networks of “orbital data centres”. These initiatives are projected to release significant levels of pollution into the stratosphere, which could drastically alter our atmosphere. According to the petition, the emissions from launching rockets and the eventual decommissioning of satellites pose a severe risk to the environment, including potential damage to the ozone layer and increased ultraviolet radiation exposure.

The petition, filed by the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER), Earthjustice, and DarkSky International, argues that the proposed satellite networks violate federal law and calls for a moratorium on new licenses. As the document states, these tech giants are touting their plans as “civilisation-changing” but have largely ignored the environmental ramifications of their lofty ambitions.

The Growing Satellite Crisis

The number of active satellites in orbit has surged from around 1,400 in 2015 to a staggering 15,000 today, with estimates suggesting this could reach 100,000 within the next decade. This exponential growth, driven largely by initiatives like SpaceX’s Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, raises critical questions about sustainability.

As highlighted by former NOAA satellite office chief Steve Volz, the environmental risks associated with launching so many satellites are substantial. “Even if they burn up upon re-entry, we cannot afford to fill our atmosphere with refuse from these operations,” he remarked, underscoring the potential dangers of increased emissions from rocket launches and the pollutants released when satellites decommission.

The petition argues that the FCC must consider the public interest before approving any satellite operations. Groups involved in the petition point to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which mandates that federal agencies evaluate the environmental consequences of their proposed projects. They contend that the satellite initiatives should fall under this act, thereby requiring a comprehensive assessment of their potential impacts.

The Cowboy Space Corporation, founded by the billionaire co-CEO of Robinhood, is among those seeking permits for its proposed 20,000-satellite system. However, critics point out that the company’s application offers little in terms of environmental mitigation strategies, raising further concerns about the lack of accountability in these ambitious ventures.

The Night Sky at Risk

Beyond atmospheric implications, the proliferation of satellites poses a threat to the night sky itself. Advocates for dark skies, like Ruskin Hartley of DarkSky International, warn that excessive light pollution could disrupt ecosystems and contribute to the decline of various species, including fireflies and other nocturnal insects. “These projects could permanently alter the night sky as we know it,” Hartley stated, emphasising the need for the FCC to consider the ecological consequences of these satellite networks.
