Questions posed ranged from the efficacy of vitamin D in cancer prevention to the safety of Covid-19 vaccines and the validity of alternative therapies over chemotherapy. The chatbot’s performance varied, revealing significant weaknesses particularly in areas like stem cell therapy and nutrition, while they fared slightly better with vaccine-related queries.
Chatbot Limitations and Risks
The researchers highlighted that AI chatbots “hallucinate,” meaning they can generate incorrect or misleading outputs due to limitations in their training data. They often prioritise user-friendly responses that may align with popular beliefs rather than presenting factual information. This is compounded by the fact that, unlike healthcare professionals, these chatbots lack the ability to reason, weigh evidence, or make ethical judgments.
Despite their sophisticated algorithms, these tools only infer responses based on statistical patterns derived from previously encountered data. They do not have access to current medical information, which is critical in a rapidly evolving field such as healthcare. Past studies have shown that even well-regarded AI sources produced accurate citations only about 32% of the time, with many responses being partially or entirely fabricated.
