Cycling through the Loire Valley is an experience steeped in beauty and history, where sun-drenched vineyards and majestic châteaux create a picturesque backdrop for a memorable getaway. This stunning region, often referred to as the Garden of France, offers an ideal blend of gentle cycling, gourmet cuisine, and fine wines, making it a perfect destination for both seasoned cyclists and leisurely explorers.

A Journey into the Heart of the Loire

A quick jaunt on the Eurostar from London to Paris, followed by a swift TGV ride south to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, transports you into a realm reminiscent of a JMW Turner painting. The charm of the Loire Valley is undeniable—its opulent châteaux, quaint honey-coloured villages, and vast fields of sunflowers create a vibrant tapestry that has captivated artists for centuries, including the likes of Leonardo da Vinci.

For those like me, who prefer a leisurely pace, the solution lies in a self-guided e-bike tour with Cycling for Softies. This adventure strikes the perfect balance between my partner Toby’s love for mountain biking and my preference for a gentler cycling experience.

Setting Off from a Historic Château

Our adventure begins at the Château du Rivau, a Renaissance gem in Lémeré, where legend holds that Joan of Arc gathered her horses before the Siege of Orléans in 1429. After sipping on a refreshing glass of local rosé and exploring the beautifully manicured gardens, we meet Quintin from Cycling for Softies. He provides us with e-bikes—an enticing upgrade that makes our three-day journey of 100 miles (160 km) more accessible.

With excitement bubbling, we set off, traversing the enchanting vineyards and charming farmhouses that dot the landscape. The Château du Rivau, lovingly restored by Patricia and Éric Laigneau, houses a contemporary art gallery that showcases modern interpretations of classic works. As we indulge in a sumptuous dinner at the chateau’s gourmet restaurant, Jardin Secret, we feast on delightful dishes like stuffed courgette flowers and roast duck, paired with a superb bottle of Chinon.

Discovering the Allure of Candes-Saint-Martin

The next morning, we bid farewell to Château du Rivau as we embark on a leisurely 27-mile ride, with Quintin handling our luggage. The route is wonderfully straightforward, and soon we find ourselves gliding along the paths of La Loire à Vélo, a 560-mile cycling trail that winds along the river from Nevers to the Atlantic.

Our first stop is Candes-Saint-Martin, an ancient river port town where the Loire meets the Vienne. We settle into a sun-drenched café, enjoying local beer and a leisurely lunch, before wandering through the quaint streets lined with antique shops and wine cellars.

As we continue our exploration, we navigate through fields dotted with wilted sunflowers and arrive at Fontevraud-l’Abbaye, one of France’s Plus Beaux Villages. Our accommodation for the night, L’Hôtel de Fontevraud L’Ermitage, offers a modern yet serene atmosphere set against the backdrop of the historic abbey, the final resting place of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Richard the Lionheart.

A Fairytale Finale at Château d’Ussé

On day two, we set out on a slightly more challenging 34-mile route, crossing back over the Loire towards Château d’Ussé, a magnificent castle that inspired Charles Perrault’s iconic tale of Sleeping Beauty. The day unfolds beautifully; the cycling path is largely traffic-free, allowing us to take in the intoxicating scents of hay and ripe apples as we glide past willow trees and serene landscapes.

Following a well-deserved break, we enjoy a leisurely lunch before reaching Château de Rochecotte, a regal retreat where breathtaking views of the valley await. Our final dinner is a feast of fresh langoustine and locally sourced pork, a fitting end to a day filled with culinary delights.

On our last day, we tackle 37 miles with ease, thanks to our trusty e-bikes. The ride takes us through enchanting medieval towns, culminating at the exquisite Château de Villandry. This 16th-century marvel, renowned for its tiered geometric gardens, is a highlight of the trip. As I meander through the meticulously designed grounds, I can’t help but think that Delphine would find great joy here, perhaps dreaming of her own fairytale.

Why it Matters

This e-bike journey through the Loire Valley is not just a holiday; it’s an immersive experience that showcases the region’s rich heritage and natural beauty. As we pedal through history, culture, and culinary excellence, we are reminded of the importance of sustainable tourism—where exploration and appreciation of local treasures go hand in hand. This adventure not only supports local economies but also encourages a deeper connection with the landscapes and stories that define this enchanting part of France.
