The study highlights that the average puffer jacket has a lifespan of about seven years, after which the environmental costs of disposal and production can mount up. With over 100 million jackets produced annually in China alone, the market for these garments continues to grow, underscoring the need for sustainable practices within the industry.
Choosing Wisely: Quality Over Quantity
Dr. Carolina Quintero Rodriguez, a fashion and textiles lecturer at RMIT University, emphasises that marketing and social media often drive consumers to buy more jackets than they actually need. A recent study from Adelaide University revealed that a staggering 89% of clothing purchases are new, even though padded jackets are among the most expensive items in many wardrobes and frequently go unworn. This highlights the importance of selecting high-quality garments from responsible brands and maintaining them for as long as possible.
Sustainable fashion consultant Julie Boulton notes that a typical puffer jacket comprises various materials: an outer shell, an insulating filler, and additional components like zips and buttons. The outer shells are often made from petroleum-based materials, while the fillings can range from down feathers to synthetic alternatives. Brands like Pangaia are now exploring plant-based fillings, showing a shift towards more sustainable options.
Caring for Your Coat: Repair and Reuse
In the UK, a staggering 1.5 billion items of clothing are purchased each year, resulting in around 220,000 tonnes ending up in landfill, according to the Australian clothing stewardship scheme, Seamless. To combat this, Boulton advises consumers to consider second-hand options before making a new purchase.
Once you have a puffer jacket, it’s crucial to prolong its life. This includes proper care, occasional airing out instead of frequent washing, and seeking out repair services offered by some outdoor brands. In fact, the Adelaide University study found that repairing garments can extend their lifespan by an average of 2.5 years, yet only about ten percent of clothing items are mended.
When washing is necessary, opt for cold water to avoid damaging the synthetic fabrics, and be mindful of the washing techniques to preserve water-resistant finishes.
The Recycling Dilemma
Despite the growing awareness of sustainability, around half of all unwanted clothing in the UK ends up in landfill, with only a fraction being recycled. Boulton points out that the recycling process is often hampered by insufficient infrastructure and the low cost of virgin polyester, making it cheaper to produce new jackets than to recycle existing ones.
Some brands have initiated take-back schemes, allowing consumers to return old garments for recycling. However, the process remains challenging and resource-intensive. Quintero Rodriguez reiterates the importance of extending the life of garments and purchasing only what is truly needed to mitigate environmental impact.
