A recent study published in *The Lancet* has highlighted a concerning oversight in the understanding of how extreme heat affects older adults, particularly those aged 60 and above. Researchers from Stanford University warn that as global temperatures continue to rise, a significant proportion of this demographic may soon find themselves unable to cope with heat stress, leading to dire health implications.
Underestimating the Vulnerability of Older Adults
The study evaluated heat exposure across different age groups—young adults (18-39 years), middle-aged adults (40-59 years), and older adults (60 years and above)—to assess how climate change will impact various populations. The findings suggest that if global temperatures increase by 1.5°C, approximately 22% of the world’s older adult population will regularly experience conditions that exceed their bodies’ ability to regulate heat.
Currently, NASA reports that the Earth’s average temperature in 2025 is around 1.19°C above pre-industrial levels, with 2024 being recorded as the hottest year to date at 1.28°C. This alarming trend suggests that rising temperatures will not only become more frequent but will also persist for longer periods, affecting a much larger segment of the population than previously anticipated.
Regions at High Risk
The research indicates that India has the highest number of individuals exposed to significant heat stress, with about 648.4 million people facing at least 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually at 3°C warming. Other regions, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger, also warrant close attention due to their high exposure rates.
The study further highlighted that more than 10 million older adults—over 80% of the population in this age group—experience at least 180 hours of heat that exceeds their compensatory limits each year. The dire situation is exacerbated in South Asia and the Persian Gulf, where older individuals could face relentless heat exposure for three months or more at temperatures exceeding 3°C.
The Demographic Shift
With the global population of individuals aged 60 and older projected to double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, the implications for public health are substantial. This age group is expected to represent 21% of the total global population by mid-century. A significant portion of this demographic will reside in low- and middle-income countries, which are already facing the brunt of heat-related stresses.
The study emphasises that overlooking the ageing population’s susceptibility to heat could lead to a serious underestimation of the risks posed by climate change, particularly in terms of the frequency and geographical spread of heat stress.
Rising Heat-Related Mortality Rates
According to the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, the rate of heat-related fatalities has surged by 23% since the 1990s, leading to an average of 546,000 deaths annually. In 2024, individuals faced an average of 16 days of hazardous heat that would not have occurred without climate change, with infants and seniors experiencing over 20 heatwave days each—a fourfold increase compared to two decades ago.
As Canada’s population continues to grow, with estimates suggesting it could reach 76 million by 2050, the challenge of safeguarding vulnerable demographics against the rising heat remains urgent. Current projections suggest a population of 41,417,056 as of April 2026, significantly down from earlier estimates.
