According to a senior government source, who has opted to remain unnamed due to restrictions on public comments, the feedback was clear: the residents of Toronto do not support the proposed changes.
This decision does not affect the ongoing airport expansion, which was approved last year to enhance runway buffer zones in compliance with new regulations from Transport Canada.
Focus on Safety Enhancements
In his statement, MacKinnon reaffirmed that the federal government’s current priority is to focus on safety measures already in progress. “At this stage, I can confirm that our focus lies exclusively on the approved safety enhancements, which are currently taking place and are required to maintain safe operations at the airport. These enhancements are expected to be completed by mid-2027,” he stated.
MacKinnon also emphasized that any future plans for the airport would take into account the voices of Toronto residents, addressing concerns spanning transportation, environmental protection, and housing.
