While the individual and their partner were isolating in British Columbia, they were subsequently admitted to a hospital in Victoria for further evaluation and testing. Initial tests returned a presumptive positive result for the virus, which was later confirmed by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg.
Health officials confirmed that the partner of the infected individual tested negative for the virus. Of the four individuals who were brought to British Columbia for precautionary measures, one additional person has been transferred to hospital due to ongoing concerns, while the fourth remains in isolation at home.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identified the strain associated with the cruise as the Andes strain, which is notable for its potential for human-to-human transmission—unlike most other hantavirus strains. Despite this, the WHO has assessed that the overall public health risk remains low.
