A significant police operation has led to the arrest of five individuals, collectively facing a staggering 74 charges related to a series of auto thefts in southwestern Ontario. The investigation, termed Project Steel, commenced in March following the theft of a vehicle from a Milton residence. The probe revealed a wider network of criminal activity, prompting a swift police response.

The operation was triggered when a Milton homeowner reported their vehicle stolen, inadvertently leaving behind their wallet, which contained bank cards. Investigators traced the use of these cards to a fast-food outlet in the Greater Toronto Area, which helped them identify multiple victims. The trail of evidence led authorities to a residence in Brampton, where the situation escalated.
On April 1, officers from Halton police executed a search warrant at the Brampton home, successfully apprehending four suspects. The police seized an array of items, including fraudulent identification documents from both Ontario and Quebec, devices capable of reprogramming vehicles, and tools designed for break-ins. Additionally, they discovered clothing worn during the thefts and medications obtained under false pretences.
The Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The investigation did not conclude with the initial arrests. A fifth suspect was apprehended on June 2, adding to the mounting list of charges. Notably, four of the suspects hail from Quebec, while one is from Ontario. Authorities are still pursuing a sixth suspect, also from Quebec, who is facing an impressive 25 charges.
According to law enforcement, the group is linked to a total of 13 auto thefts and attempted thefts within Halton Region, as well as another incident in Waterloo Region. The charges faced by the accused include theft of a motor vehicle, identity fraud, and unauthorized use of credit cards.
