A recent probe into a spate of auto thefts in southwestern Ontario has culminated in the arrest of five individuals, collectively facing 74 charges. Known as Project Steel, the investigation commenced in March after a vehicle was stolen from a Milton residence, with the victim’s wallet and bank cards subsequently used at a fast-food establishment in the Greater Toronto Area.
The Investigation Unfolds
The theft that triggered this extensive investigation involved a family in Milton, who reported their vehicle stolen from their driveway. The swift actions of law enforcement led to the identification of several victims, ultimately tracing the suspects to a home in Brampton.
On April 1, officers from Halton police executed a search warrant at the Brampton residence, apprehending four suspects. During the operation, police seized a trove of items that included fraudulent identification from both Ontario and Quebec, vehicle reprogramming devices, magnetic trackers, as well as break-and-enter tools. Notably, investigators also recovered clothing linked to the thefts and medication obtained through fraudulent means.
Arrests and Ongoing Pursuit
A fifth suspect was apprehended later on June 2. Among the five individuals arrested, four hail from Quebec, with the remaining suspect from Ontario. The police are actively searching for a sixth suspect, also from Quebec, who faces 25 charges.
The investigation has revealed that this group is believed to be connected to a total of 14 auto thefts and attempted thefts across Halton Region, with an additional incident reported in Waterloo Region. The charges levied against the arrested suspects include theft of a motor vehicle, identity fraud, and unauthorized use of a credit card, among others.
