Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced the sale of a private government jet, merely two days after the acquisition was made public. The 2016 Bombardier Challenger 650, purchased for £28.9 million from a South American firm, had sparked intense scrutiny and backlash from various political factions in Ontario.

Jet Purchase Sparks Political Outcry

The decision to procure a private jet for the Premier’s travels ignited a firestorm of criticism, earning the moniker “gravy plane” from opposition leaders, a nod to the infamous campaign slogan of the late Rob Ford, Doug’s brother, who vowed to eliminate waste in city hall spending. The backlash reached a crescendo following the announcement on Friday, which revealed the finalisation of the purchase the previous week.

In a statement released on Sunday, Ford acknowledged the public’s concerns, emphasising that he had come to agree with the sentiment that this was not the optimal time for such an expenditure. “Despite the best of intentions, I have heard and agree that now is not the right time for the expense of a government plane,” Ford remarked. He further noted that the province is collaborating with Bombardier and other stakeholders to expedite the sale of the aircraft.

Defending the Decision

Initially, Ford’s office defended the necessity of the jet, claiming it would facilitate “more certain, flexible, secure and confidential travel.” This justification included references to his frequent trips within Ontario and meetings with other premiers and the Prime Minister. However, as public discontent grew, so did the political pressure.

The Premier’s opponents in the legislature have accused him of only retracting the decision due to significant public opposition. Marit Stiles, leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP), likened Ford’s decision to his controversial plan to open protected Greenbelt land for development, which has been under investigation by the RCMP since October 2023. “Doug Ford is turning the plane around mid-air for an emergency landing because he got caught living like a rockstar on your dime,” Stiles posted on social media. “Just like the Greenbelt: Ford only reverses when the heat gets too hot.”

Potential Financial Ramifications

Interim Ontario Liberal leader John Fraser raised concerns about the potential financial implications of the jet purchase. He cautioned that the aircraft could be sold at a loss, ultimately becoming a financial burden for taxpayers. “Doug Ford says now isn’t the right time? There’s never a right time to spend £28.9 million on a private jet,” Fraser asserted, questioning the overall cost to Ontario taxpayers.

Ford’s recent plans also include acquiring the City of Toronto’s stake in Billy Bishop Airport, with intentions to expand it for jet access. This course of action has further alienated the provincial government from its counterparts in Alberta and British Columbia, whose premiers typically utilise commercial airlines for travel.

A Shift in Travel Plans

Previously, the Ontario government owned two King Air turboprop planes, which have since been sold. Ford had previously taken pride in being the first Premier not to utilise the King Air, opting instead for chartered flights, including a recent trip to Texas aimed at promoting Ontario businesses and contesting U.S. tariffs. Upcoming engagements include a visit to South Carolina in June and Utah in July to attend conferences with fellow premiers and meet with governors.

On Monday, Ford is set to attend a Canadian Chamber of Commerce business summit in Ottawa alongside the premiers of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and the Northwest Territories.

Why it Matters

The swift decision to sell the private jet underscores the precarious nature of public trust in government spending. As taxpayers become increasingly vigilant about how their money is utilised, the episode serves as a reminder of the potential political consequences of perceived extravagance. Ford’s about-face not only reflects the pressures of public opinion but also highlights the ongoing scrutiny faced by government officials regarding fiscal responsibility in an era of heightened economic uncertainty.
