In an inspiring tale of unexpected turns, Josef Buttigieg, a biology professor at the University of Regina, has transitioned from academia to farming, creating a vibrant agricultural experience in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Initially seeking a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of Toronto, Buttigieg’s foray into farming has blossomed into a thriving venture that not only reconnects people with nature but also promotes environmental stewardship.

A New Beginning in Saskatchewan

Buttigieg’s journey began in 2017 when he relocated to Saskatchewan for his teaching role, aiming to escape the frenetic pace of urban life. “The farm was supposed to be an acreage,” he recalls, sharing his vision of owning a space reminiscent of a cottage, but more versatile. The idea was simple: to cultivate a piece of land where he could engage in a richer, more fulfilling lifestyle. Initially, it was just a few animals, but the experience was transformative.

With a PhD in neurophysiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Buttigieg was ready for a slower pace of living. However, what started as a temporary distraction soon became a significant part of his life. “I thought I’d just have some fun with it, maybe earn a bit of gas money or beer money on the side,” he admits. Yet, as word spread about his farm, he found himself at the helm of an unexpected enterprise.

The Evolution of Fenek Farm

Just a year after acquiring the land, Buttigieg opened his farm to visitors, initially welcoming his daughter’s friends. The response was overwhelmingly positive, much to his surprise. “People started knocking on the door, asking if they could come and have a look,” he recounts. What was intended as a casual engagement quickly transformed into a flourishing business.

Today, Fenek Farm hosts hundreds of visitors each week, providing a range of experiences from guided tours to hands-on encounters with over 300 animals, including sheep, alpacas, and rabbits. The farm has evolved into a multi-faceted attraction, offering goods, a petting zoo, hayrides, and various events. “All of a sudden we had people banging down the door for that,” Buttigieg adds, highlighting the community’s enthusiastic embrace of the farm.

Accessibility and Community Engagement

A key philosophy for Buttigieg is ensuring that the farm remains accessible and affordable for everyone. He prioritises ethical pricing for goods and activities, ensuring that experiences like hayrides are wheelchair-friendly. “I want to create a space where everyone feels welcome,” he states, reflecting his commitment to inclusivity.

Raising his children on the farm has also been a significant shift from his own upbringing. He hopes that growing up in this environment will instill in them a spirit of hard work and an appreciation for nature. “They never know what they’ll encounter on the farm,” he remarks, encouraging visitors to come with an open mindset. “You might witness the birth of a new animal or see sheep running free.”

Embracing the Unexpected

Buttigieg’s story exemplifies how life can take unexpected paths, leading to fulfilling outcomes. His journey from professor to farmer has not only enriched his life but has also created a platform for community engagement and environmental consciousness. The farm serves as a reminder of the joys of simplicity and the importance of reconnecting with our roots.

Why it Matters

The transformation of Fenek Farm is more than just a personal story; it highlights a growing movement towards sustainable and community-oriented farming practices in Canada. As urban dwellers increasingly seek connections to nature, farms like Buttigieg’s play a vital role in fostering environmental awareness and appreciation. In an era where the divide between urban life and agriculture widens, initiatives like these remind us of the necessity of maintaining a harmonious relationship with our environment.
