World leaders have convened in Evian-les-Bains, France, for the first full day of discussions at the G7 summit, with particular emphasis on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined other heads of state as they strategised on how to bring an end to a war that has persisted for over four years, following Russia’s full-scale invasion. French President Emmanuel Macron extended a warm welcome to Zelensky, setting the stage for critical dialogue surrounding the war’s resolution.

Urgent Negotiations on Ukraine

The summit comes at a pivotal moment, as recent developments in the Middle East have shifted some focus away from the Ukraine situation. U.S. President Donald Trump, who was absent from initial discussions, announced a new agreement aimed at concluding the U.S. military engagement in Iran. He expressed optimism, stating, “Now that this (Iran) is finished, we’re going to be focusing on that,” during his address at the summit.

As negotiations unfolded, leaders from Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, and Japan engaged in discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, laying the groundwork for a focused session on Ukraine. In a significant move, the British government unveiled a fresh set of sanctions targeting the “shadow fleet” employed by Russia to transport oil and gas, alongside the financial networks facilitating Moscow’s evasion of Western sanctions. This included penalties against vessels recently acquired by Russia to transport liquefied natural gas from its Arctic LNG 2 project.

Escalating Attacks and Ukraine’s EU Ambitions

Hours before the summit commenced, Russia launched a wave of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine’s major cities, resulting in at least 11 fatalities and igniting fires at significant landmarks. This escalation follows separate phone conversations between Zelensky, Putin, and Trump, indicating an ongoing commitment to diplomatic efforts aimed at ceasing hostilities.

While campaigning for a return to the White House, Trump had previously claimed he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within a day of taking office. However, he has since recognised the complexities involved, admitting it has proven more challenging than anticipated. Amidst this backdrop, Ukraine has officially initiated negotiations for European Union membership, viewing it as a vital security guarantee for a peaceful future once the war concludes.

The Middle East and Broader Implications

Tuesday’s agenda also included a session dedicated to addressing instability in the Middle East, with leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates joining the talks. Tensions have flared between Trump and other G7 leaders, including Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, over Trump’s unilateral decisions regarding military actions in the region. Despite these tensions, there is a consensus on the importance of stabilising oil markets affected by the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump expressed confidence about the potential for positive developments in the Middle East, stating, “I think a lot of great things are going to happen right now,” while also acknowledging the recent fluctuations in oil prices and stock market performance.

Future Directions and Global Cooperation

As the summit progresses, Trump is slated to hold discussions with leaders from Qatar and the UAE, followed by a cultural performance and a dinner with fellow G7 officials. The G7, encompassing France, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, has also welcomed guest nations including Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Korea for select discussions.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasised the collaborative nature of the future global order, stating that no single institution or nation would possess all the solutions. He highlighted the importance of unified action on pressing issues such as artificial intelligence and child safety, suggesting that collective efforts will be essential in navigating future challenges.

Why it Matters

The discussions at the G7 summit hold profound implications for global stability and security. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and tensions in the Middle East, the outcomes of these meetings could significantly influence international relations and economic conditions. As leaders strive to forge a path towards peace in Ukraine and stability in the Middle East, their decisions will resonate far beyond the summit, shaping the geopolitical landscape for years to come.
