Generative AI Adoption Among Canadian Workers Reveals Significant Disparities Across Professions

According to a recent report from Statistics Canada, the utilisation of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools by Canadian workers is on the rise, although the extent of this adoption varies significantly across different sectors. Released on Thursday, the report indicates that 35.9 per cent of employees engaged with generative AI tools in the past year, highlighting both the growing awareness and the contrasting levels of familiarity with these technologies among the workforce.

AI Awareness and Familiarity

The report, titled “Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools Among Canadian Workers,” is based on data from the Labour Force Survey. It reveals that a staggering 93.4 per cent of workers are aware of generative AI tools, with over half—51.5 per cent—expressing familiarity with their applications. This widespread awareness signifies a potential shift in workplace dynamics as more employees consider incorporating AI into their daily tasks.

Professions Leading the Charge

Statistics Canada categorised professions into three distinct streams to better understand AI adoption.

1. **High Exposure and High Complementarity**: This category includes roles where AI not only assists but enhances human capabilities, such as in healthcare, education, and engineering. Here, 53.8 per cent of workers reported using AI tools in their jobs, indicating a strong integration of technology into these fields.

2. **High Exposure and Low Complementarity**: Professions susceptible to AI replacement, such as retail, office support, and certain tech roles, fall into this group. In these sectors, 45.9 per cent of workers are using generative AI tools. The reliance on AI in these jobs raises questions about the future of employment in areas where tasks can be automated.

3. **Low Exposure**: In professions deemed least likely to be affected by AI, such as skilled trades and emergency services, the usage plummets to just 14.2 per cent. This disparity underscores the uneven impact of AI across various job markets.

Management roles stand out with the highest rate of AI engagement, as 75.1 per cent of managers reported using these tools. In contrast, those in trades and transportation saw the least engagement, at just 14.7 per cent.

Patterns of AI Utilisation

While the adoption of AI tools is increasing, the frequency of usage remains inconsistent. Almost two-thirds (63.5 per cent) of those who engaged with AI tools indicated moderate usage, applying AI to some but not all of their tasks. A quarter of respondents described their usage as minimal, relying on AI for only a handful of activities. Conversely, 11.6 per cent reported broad usage, with 8 per cent employing AI for most tasks and 3.6 per cent for nearly all tasks.

Interestingly, over 30 per cent of regular users engage with AI tools on a daily basis, while 38.3 per cent use them several times a week. However, 21.7 per cent only utilise AI occasionally, indicating a varied approach to integrating these tools into workflows.

Age Disparities in AI Usage

Generational differences also play a role in the uptake of generative AI. Core-aged workers, those between 25 and 54 years old, show the highest engagement, with 56.9 per cent reporting the use of AI tools. In comparison, 45.3 per cent of workers aged 55 and older utilise generative AI, while only 39.1 per cent of younger workers, aged 15 to 24, have adopted these technologies. This trend suggests that familiarity with digital tools and comfort with technology may influence AI adoption rates among different age groups.

As generative AI tools become more prevalent, understanding the disparity in usage across professions and age groups is crucial. As companies and employees navigate this evolving landscape, the need for upskilling and adapting to new technologies will be paramount to ensure a balanced transition into an AI-augmented workforce.
