Giant Whales Embrace New Feeding Grounds as Greenland’s Ice Melts

In a remarkable transformation of the marine ecosystem, giant whales are now frequenting the waters off East Greenland, taking advantage of the rapidly retreating sea ice. This significant shift, revealed through an extensive multi-decade study, highlights the adaptability of these magnificent creatures to changing environmental conditions, as they venture into territories previously barred to them by ice.

A New Era for Whales in Greenland

Once a bastion of ice, the coastal waters of East Greenland have opened up dramatically due to climate change. Historically, species such as humpback, minke, and fin whales were effectively excluded from these regions, but as ice diminishes, they are now feasting in what scientists describe as seasonal “feeding frenzies”. This phenomenon represents a substantial ecological shift in the North Atlantic, as these whales exploit the newly available food sources in increasingly ice-free summers.

The data collected during this study is striking. Prior to 2006, there were no recorded sightings of humpback whales in the area, but by 2024, researchers noted a staggering rise to 150 sightings. This surge has been documented through both ship-based surveys and systematic aerial observations, revealing a clear trend toward increased whale activity in these previously inaccessible waters.

The Scale of the Change

The research led by Professor Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen from the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources has provided a comprehensive overview of whale populations in the region. Aerial surveys conducted in 2015 and 2024, alongside satellite tracking of 15 whales and insights from local Inuit hunters, have painted a vivid picture of this ecological transformation. An estimated 4,000 humpback, 6,000 fin, and 6,000 minke whales were observed in the Greenland Sea during the summer of 2024 alone.

Professor Heide-Jørgensen remarked on the profound nature of these changes, stating, “The alterations we are witnessing here are likely the most extreme in any subarctic region.” The driving forces behind this shift are primarily rising sea temperatures and enhanced food availability, as warming waters attract various fish species that these whales now target for sustenance. It is estimated that during the summer feeding season, these three whale species could consume upwards of 800,000 tonnes of fish and krill.

A Complex Ecological Landscape

While the influx of these baleen whales represents a positive adaptation for some species, the full ecological implications remain unclear. Experts express concern about whether this phenomenon indicates a population increase or merely a redistribution of whales from other regions, particularly West Greenland, where hunting practices complicate the narrative.

Professor Heide-Jørgensen has pointed out the delicate balance at play in this shifting habitat. “For some species, climate change is not necessarily a problem—it opens up new opportunities,” he explained. However, this newfound advantage comes at a cost for other Arctic species, like narwhals and belugas, which are struggling to coexist within their changing environments. The encroachment of these larger whales could displace them from their traditional habitats, further exacerbating their vulnerabilities.

As certain species of whales thrive in new conditions, we must remain vigilant about the implications for other Arctic wildlife that are not adapting as successfully.
