A powerful 7.7 magnitude quake struck near Jakarta, Indonesia, on Saturday, marking the eleventh seismic incident exceeding a magnitude of seven this year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Notably, five of these have occurred since June, alongside 34 additional earthquakes recorded in the six to 6.9 magnitude range.

The USGS typically anticipates around 16 major earthquakes annually, which includes approximately 15 in the seven magnitude category and at least one reaching magnitude eight or higher. In their classification system, a quake measuring 5.3 is deemed “moderate,” while a 6.3 is considered “strong.” Earthquakes classified from seven to 7.9 are regarded as “major” by Earthquakes Canada, with those at six or higher often leading to extensive damage.
John Cassidy, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, noted, “We’re three-quarters of the way through the year; we’ve had 11 earthquakes when the average would suggest 12. We’re just about on average.” This statement highlights the lack of an unusual uptick in seismic activity, despite the prominent media coverage surrounding recent disasters.

Yearly, the globe experiences around 20,000 earthquakes, averaging approximately 55 per day, as outlined by the National Earthquake Information Centre. The primary cause of these significant seismic events is the movement of tectonic plates. Cassidy elaborated, “For the big earthquakes, what really drives those is the movement of tectonic plates. In Indonesia and on Canada’s west coast, oceanic plates are being forced underneath continental plates, leading to a collision.” He compared this slow but constant movement to the rate at which fingernails grow, noting that over a century, this gradual shift can result in considerable seismic activity.
In Canada alone, there have been 2,819 earthquakes in 2026, according to Earthquakes Canada’s data. These statistics underscore the ongoing seismic activity that, while concerning, fits within expected patterns.

Robert Shcherbakov, an earth sciences professor at Western University, highlighted that the intensity of earthquakes is influenced by both their location and depth. “Earthquakes that occur closer to the surface tend to generate more ground shaking,” he explained. This surface proximity can lead to increased structural damage, particularly in areas where building standards may not be as stringent.
He further compared the resilience of infrastructures in various regions, remarking, “In Japan, for instance, the quality of buildings—especially older ones that have been retrofitted—allows them to withstand seismic activity much better than in other parts of the world.” This differential in construction quality can significantly impact the devastating effects of earthquakes.

This year has also seen tragic earthquakes in other parts of the world. A 7.2 magnitude quake hit Venezuela’s northern coast on June 24, followed by an even stronger 7.5 quake mere seconds later, resulting in over 6,000 fatalities. Similarly, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Kyushu island on July 28, claiming 38 lives, while a 7.4 magnitude quake in Colombia on August 10 left nearly 300 dead.
While the numbers of earthquakes may not deviate significantly from the norm, the severity of recent events and their proximity to populated areas has been particularly alarming. Cassidy remarked, “The biggest difference this year is not the numbers, but just the fact that these earthquakes are close to major population centres and vulnerable areas, and we’ve seen terrible impacts from these earthquakes.”
