Global Rice Shortage Predicted as Middle East Conflict and El Niño Disrupt Food Security

As geopolitical tensions escalate in the Middle East and adverse weather patterns emerge, the world faces a significant decline in rice production, a staple food crucial for global nutrition. The ongoing conflict in Iran has severely impacted the supply chain for essential fertilisers and fuels, while the anticipated El Niño phenomenon threatens to exacerbate agricultural challenges, particularly in Asia.

Disrupted Supply Chains

The repercussions of the Iran conflict are already reverberating through the agricultural sector, particularly affecting major rice-exporting nations like Thailand and Vietnam. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for oil and fertiliser shipments, has become a focal point of disruption, leading to increasing costs and logistical challenges. Farmers in these countries are reporting heightened production expenses due to rising fertiliser prices and limited access to necessary resources.

Maximo Torero, chief economist at the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), noted that many farmers have begun planting with fewer resources due to surging prices. “We are going to see a tighter global supply situation in the second half of the year and early next year,” he cautioned.

In addition to the geopolitical instability, the El Niño weather pattern is expected to bring hotter and drier conditions to Southeast Asia later this year. This climatic shift could further diminish yields at a time when farmers are already under immense pressure.

Agricultural Impact Across Asia

A notable example of the situation’s severity is seen in Thailand, where local farmer Sripai Kaew-Eam reported that her production costs have soared to approximately 6,000 baht ($183.99) per rai (0.4 acre). This is a significant increase from previous costs, driven largely by high fertiliser and fuel prices. The price she receives for her unhusked rice hovers around 6,200 baht per metric ton, leaving little room for profit.

The Philippines, the largest rice importer in the world, faces a precarious situation as farmers contemplate reducing their planting due to high costs. Executive director of the Integrated Rural Development Foundation, Arze Glipo, warned that production could plummet by as much as 6 million tons, reducing the expected output from around 19 million to 20 million tons to dangerously low levels. “This would leave the Philippines in a precarious position, as imports are also uncertain due to export restrictions,” he explained.

In Indonesia, while fertiliser availability remains stable, the looming El Niño is projected to reduce the harvest area significantly. The country’s statistics bureau estimates a decline in rice production by over 11%, highlighting the widespread impact of these compounding crises.

Price Volatility and Future Projections

Despite the grim outlook for rice production, global rice inventories remain relatively robust following several years of high output. India, the world’s largest exporter, holds record stockpiles of approximately 42 million tons, which constitutes about one-fifth of the global reserves. This buffer may help alleviate some immediate supply concerns, but the FAO’s Torero warns that prices are likely to rise regardless of potential improvements in the situation at the Strait of Hormuz.

“Even if the strait were to reopen today, we would still see price increases due to the accumulated pressures on supply,” he stated. The urgency of re-establishing fuel and fertiliser flows cannot be understated; if the situation does not improve within the next few weeks, the implications could be dire.
