Despite a string of powerful earthquakes making headlines around the world, experts affirm that 2026 is not witnessing an unusual frequency of significant seismic events. Recent seismic activities, including a 7.7 magnitude quake that struck Indonesia, have led to heightened public concern, but the data suggests that the year is largely on par with historical averages.

Recent Earthquakes and Their Impact

On Saturday, a severe earthquake measuring 7.7 struck near Indonesia’s capital, marking the eleventh quake of magnitude seven or greater recorded this year and the fifth since June, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This is part of a broader pattern, with 34 earthquakes falling within the magnitude range of six to 6.9 in 2026.

According to the USGS, an average year typically sees around 16 major earthquakes, which includes 15 in the magnitude seven range and one at magnitude eight or higher. While a magnitude of 5.3 is classified as “moderate,” a 6.3 is deemed “strong,” and quakes between seven and 7.9 are considered “major.” These higher-magnitude events often lead to widespread destruction, especially in densely populated areas.

John Cassidy, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada, stated, “We’re three-quarters of the way through the year; we’ve had 11 earthquakes when the average would suggest 12. We’re just about on average.” His remarks underscore that while the intensity of recent quakes has been significant, the overall number aligns with expectations.

Understanding the Mechanics of Earthquakes

The phenomenon of major earthquakes is primarily driven by the movement of tectonic plates, Cassidy explains. In regions like Indonesia and the west coast of Canada, oceanic plates are being pushed beneath continental plates, leading to a collision that can result in significant seismic activity. These tectonic movements occur at a slow pace—typically five to seven centimetres annually—yet over decades, this gradual shift can culminate in substantial earthquakes, equivalent to a magnitude seven or larger event.

Canada has recorded a total of 2,819 earthquakes this year, as per Earthquakes Canada’s data. Robert Shcherbakov, an earth sciences professor at Western University, highlights that both the location and depth of these earthquakes greatly influence their severity. “Earthquakes that occur close to the surface usually create more ground shaking, leading to greater damage,” he noted. The quality of local infrastructure also plays a critical role in determining the extent of destruction.

The Global Context

In June, Venezuela experienced two major quakes—a 7.2 magnitude tremor followed closely by a 7.5 magnitude quake—resulting in over 6,000 fatalities. More recently, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Japan’s Kyushu region, claiming 38 lives, while a 7.4 magnitude quake in Colombia on August 10 left nearly 300 dead.

Despite these high-profile disasters, Shcherbakov maintains that this year’s earthquake tally reflects a typical pattern. “From this perspective, this year’s seismic activity is not alarming,” he asserted.

However, Cassidy points out that what sets 2026 apart is not merely the frequency of earthquakes but their proximity to vulnerable populations. “These earthquakes have been particularly devastating, with significant impacts,” he remarked, highlighting the intersection of natural disasters and human infrastructure.
