Global Warming Poses Increasing Heat Risks for Older Adults, New Study Reveals

A recent study published in The Lancet has highlighted the severe and often overlooked impact of extreme heat on individuals aged 60 and above. Conducted by researchers at Stanford University, the study indicates that as global temperatures rise, a significant segment of the older population may soon struggle to cope with heat, which could have dire health implications.

The Rising Temperature Crisis

The research assesses the potential effects of climate change on various age groups, particularly focusing on young adults (aged 18–39), middle-aged individuals (40–59), and seniors (60 years and older). According to the study, if the average global temperature were to increase by 1.5°C, approximately 22 per cent of older adults worldwide would face “frequent and widespread exceedance of heat-compensability limits.” This means that their bodies would fail to regulate temperature effectively, exposing them to significant health risks.

Current estimates from NASA reveal that the Earth’s average temperature in 2025 is projected to be approximately 2.14°F (1.19°C) above pre-industrial levels. Alarmingly, the year 2024 has already been recorded as the warmest to date, reaching 2.30°F (1.28°C) above normal. The study underscores the urgent need to understand how increasing temperatures will challenge human heat tolerance across the globe.

Vulnerable Regions and Populations

The findings also highlight that certain countries, particularly in South Asia, will bear the brunt of this escalating heat crisis. India, for instance, has the highest number of people exposed to over 180 hours of “uncompensable heat stress” annually, affecting approximately 648.4 million individuals at a 3°C warming scenario. Other nations such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Niger are also identified as particularly vulnerable.

The report estimates that over 10 million older adults—around 80 per cent of the senior population in these regions—will experience prolonged exposure to dangerous heat levels, potentially lasting day and night for three consecutive months. With projections indicating that the global population aged 60 and older could double from one billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion by 2050, the implications of this study become increasingly pressing.

Health Risks and Mortality Rates

The research found that the health risks posed by extreme heat are disproportionately severe for older adults. As populations age, they are likely to encounter “imminent risks” to their well-being. The study notes that over two-thirds of older adults are expected to reside in low and middle-income countries, which are particularly susceptible to these extreme heat conditions.

Furthermore, the 2025 report from the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), reveals that heat-related mortality has surged by 23 per cent since the 1990s. An alarming average of 546,000 deaths per year can be attributed to heat, with older adults and infants facing an average of over 20 heatwave days annually— a staggering fourfold increase compared to two decades ago.

The Need for Action

The findings from this study highlight a critical oversight in previous climate projections, which have often focused on younger populations, disregarding the vulnerabilities of older adults. This neglect could seriously underestimate the scale and immediacy of heat stress as climate change accelerates.

As the global climate continues to warm, understanding the geographical spread and intensity of hazardous heat conditions is paramount. The study calls for immediate attention and action to address the unique challenges faced by older adults in the context of rising temperatures.
