A recent study published in the *BMJ* has revealed that patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists for Type 2 diabetes may face a higher likelihood of experiencing hair loss. In an extensive observational study involving over 50,000 patients with Type 2 diabetes, researchers compared the effects of GLP-1 receptor stimulants against other diabetes treatments, specifically SGLT-2 and DPP-4 inhibitors. The analysis indicated that individuals taking GLP-1 medications had a 37% higher risk of alopecia compared to those on SGLT-2 inhibitors, and a staggering 68% increased risk relative to DPP-4 users. The study suggests that the medications themselves might not directly harm hair follicles. Instead, the broader metabolic and hormonal changes induced by GLP-1 receptor agonists could disrupt hair follicle growth and cycling. Additionally, gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea and reduced food intake, could contribute to nutritional deficiencies that may exacerbate hair loss.

Netchiporouk emphasised the importance of managing weight loss pace. “If individuals aim for a steady loss of one to two pounds a week, the risk of hair shedding diminishes significantly. Those unconcerned about hair loss can follow this route, knowing that their hair will eventually regrow,” she advised.

Regulatory Response

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously acknowledged reports of hair loss linked to the initiation of GLP-1 receptor agonists, particularly the medications semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are found in popular weight loss treatments like Wegovy and Ozempic. In light of these findings, the FDA is actively evaluating this potential safety signal.

While hair loss does not typically pose a physical threat, the psychosocial ramifications can be significant, impacting self-esteem and overall quality of life. The study also references previous research indicating that GLP-1 usage correlates with increased hair loss rates, adding credibility to these findings.
