A judge has ordered Google to share data and make further changes intended to address the company’s monopoly power in online advertising technology, but the remedy does not require the search giant to be broken up. The decision leaves Google’s core business largely intact while imposing a forced-access model on part of the ad-tech ecosystem it dominates.

A forced-access remedy, not a structural split

The government had sought a more radical answer: dismantle parts of Google’s advertising business so rivals could compete on a more equal footing. The judge’s order takes a different route. Rather than carving the company apart, it aims to reduce the advantage Google gains from controlling key data and infrastructure used across the digital advertising market.
